Hello, my grandfather was Jeremiah Twomey (born circa 1896), son of William Twomey (born circa 1857) and Norah Twomey.

The Twomey family, including my father, (also) William ('Billy') Twomey, lived at 1 Dock Terrace, Rushbrook until circa 1940. Jeremiah was a ships plumber in the dockyard and I know my grandfather came from a large family of nine children, and I am just starting genealogical research into my family.

I would very much appreciate hearing from anyone who is related to me or can provide any information on my family - thank you.

Kind Regards

Michael Twomey

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I located the 1885 marriage of Jeremiah's parents. The transcription is below and shows the names of the fathers of the bride and groom.

I also located the 1901 and 1911 census records for the family.

  • Hi Roger, thank you for your reply and information regarding Jeremiah Twomey - this fills in some blanks in my research!

My family tree on the Twomey side is:-

    1. Michael Twomey (me)
    2. William (Bill) Twomey (father)
    3. Jeremiah Twomey (b. 1896) and Mary Bridget O'Leary (grandparents)
    4. William Twomey (b 1857) and Honorah Keller (b 1868) - Married 27th June 1885 (great grandparents)
    5. Jeremiah Twomey / Patrick Keller (great-great grandfathers)

I have the census data from 1901 and 1911 which gives details of my great-grandfather William and his family.

In regards to the marriage transcript of William and Honorah, could I ask where you located this and can you advise where I might find birth, marriage and death information on my relatives - are these held by Cobh Cathedral officials?

    Kind Regards

    Mike

  • Mike:

I located the transcription of the church marriage record on Roots Ireland which is a subscription site.

Here is the link to the parish register for Cobh RC church. http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0036  Baptismal records are from 1812-1880 and marriage records from 1815-1880. No death data on this register.

Civil registration started in 1864 so for any events 1864 onward assuming the family reported the event, there should be a civil record. There are subscription sites which have index records and using these index records, you can write to the General Register Office for a copy ( 4 euros each).

Is there anyone in particular that you are looking for?

  • Roger,

as a start I would like to track down marriage certificate of Jeremiah Twomey and Mary O'Leary and death certifcate again for Jeremiah (b1896) - from this I will start working 'backwards' to see how far I can trace the Twomey family line.

Thanks again for your help - much appreciated.

    Kind Regards

Do you have a year for the marriage? I can see a 1931 marriage for a Jerome Twomey where one of the possible spouses was a Mary Leary. Also if he died post-1958 there won't be a index record.

  • Roger, Jeremiah was born circa 1896. His wife was Mary Bridget O'Leary daughter of Bartholomew O'Leary and Catherine (Kate) Sweeney.

Jeremiahs first-born was my father William Twomey who was born in 1925 so Jeremiah and Mary would have been married prior to this. He served in WW1 until 1917 so I estimate they were married between 1917 and 1925.

This is likely the civil death index record for Jeremiah.

Also found the likely civil marriage record from 1923.

Copies of both records can be obtained from the General Register Office for around four euros each. If you need instructions, let me know.

  • Hi Michael,

I was born Jill Elizabeth Twomey and was born in 1966 in NY.  I am also looking for information on the Twomey side.  The Twomeys in the states do not speak to me due to a divorce from my mother. I do have Jeremiah as my second grandfather.  Thanks, Jill E. Twomey
