Looking for the family of Tierney and Ann O'Rourke of Sranavagaragh townland. Tierney died there in 1880 abt 75 years old. Tierney had a brother Peter who lived in Mullandarragh townland.  There was also a Terrence O'Rourke who lived in Sranavagaragh and he may have been a brother or cousin. Tierney's son James was my great grandfather - he joined the RIC and died in Ballina, county Mayo in 1891. Any info is appreciated.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

It will be difficult to search for your family because RC church records for that area start very late. Drumreilly Lower church starts in 1867 and Drumreilly Upper starts in the 1870s.

I did check the 1833 Tithe Applotment list for Drumreilly parish and there were five Rorke records although none in Sranagarvanagh.

The 1857 Griffiths shows Tierney and Terence as you indicated in Sranagarvanagh and there was also a Francis.

I looked for the 1880 civil death index record for Tierney but could not find the record.

There are Rourke families in the 1901 census for Sranagarvanagh

Thank you for your help Roger. Do you know if there is a way to track land changing hands? I'm wondering if it might be possible to track the family over time that way and identify which O'Rourke in the 1901 census and going forward might be related? I actually have Tierney's death cert...his name is spelled Roarke on it...that's how I know he died in Sranagarvanagh - how do you pronounce that?

Is there away, like a public phonebook or something to identify O'Rourkes who might still be living in the area?

    Thanks again, Mary K O'Rourke

Here is a link to the online Irish phonebook. Make sure you use the Residential Tab. http://www.eirphonebook.ie/q/name/

Only a percentage of phone users are in this directory. There are 18 O'Rourkes lsited but our privacy rules prevent me from sharing the info directly.

Subsequent to the Griffiths Valuation there were cancelled land books. Below are two links with background. They are not online and you would have to go to Dublin or order microfilm throught the Mormon Church www.familysearch.org
