We are trying to find out if the Thomastown Grady's are related to our family.  our GG grandfather Martin Gready was born in Roscrea, Tipperary, but the family story has it that we are from Kilkenny.  The family names used are Patrick, Martin, and Michael particularly, and we can see these names used a lot in the Thomastown Grady family.  Does anyone know if a branch of this family moved to Roscrea and then of a Martin Gready who left for Australia in 1850?

Julie (GG granddaughter of Martin Grady) Sydney, Australia.

  • Hi Julie

Unfortunately the early Irish Censuses don't have both Tipp & Kilk info so no luck there.

However the Tithe Applotments (free at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/) have 17 Gradys in Roscrea in 1823 but only 1 in Thomastown in 1833.

The earliest birth/baptisms on www.rootsireland.ie/ are from Kilkenny:

     Name:Michael GradyDate of Birth:

    Date of Baptism:09-Oct-1768Address:Not RecordedParish/District:ST. MARY'SGender:MaleCountyCo. Kilkenny

You didn't give a birth year for Martin but here's a possible:

    Name:Martin GradyDate of Birth:

    Date of Baptism:02-Jan-1826Address:Not RecordedParish/District:ROSCREAGender:MaleCountyCo. Tipperary

    Denomination:Roman Catholic
    Father:Patrick GradyMother:Ellen PineOccupation:

If this is the correct one I can look for the parents' marriage and try to work back from there

  • Thanks Colin.. I just saw your post! Yes we do have a lot on our martial ready and know he was born to Pareick Gready and Ellen pine in Roscrea in 1825.  We are trying to go one generation back to find a link to Kilkenny.  I subscribe to rootsireland and trawl through what records there are, but I am hoping they may be living descendants in Ireland who just may see these posts and know something.  Mean while, I am looking at the Kilkenny bap registers that you mentioned. Thanks for responding

  • Hi Col

I subscribe to rootsireland, so I get to see the parish registers etc.. So we can see all the prison register entries and search on them etc.. I guess I am hoping someone in Ireland who has family history might see these posts..  It is looking like our Patrick Gready may have been born in thomastown and that he married an Ellen Pine also from thomastown.

It would help us greatly if there were any pines or gready/Grady's in thomastown who may know if a Patrick Gready and Ellen pine who married around 1805-1810 left and moved to Roscrea county Tipperary.  What is the best way to make contact with families still in thomastown who may be able to help? Thanks very much for your help Julie
