  • Christina:

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I found a Joseph Bolton in an Industrial school in Drogheda in the 1901 census. Possibly this is your ancestor.

I will alert our parish liaison in that area regarding your message.

  • Hello Christina I am the Drogheda Volunteer and have looked over the query and can find no relevant information but am seeking some more information if you have it, firstly do you know the religion of the family at the time. The link Roger posted to the census is I think for the orphanage and the Joseph is aged 7and religion RC, so born circa late 1893 or early 1894, the census was I think done in April. I can find only 4 Boltons registered in Dundalk circa this period, 1892 to 1896, two female and two male and one died young, the other male is named Francis so unless he was Christened Francis Joseph and called Joseph he is not correct.

I also searched Ireland for the parents deaths of the young chap in the orphanage and the most likely is a Samuel and Susan who died in India, places called Bellary and Roorkee, the deaths are registered in Ireland. There is no sign of Joseph in the 1911 census but there is an 18 year old Joseph in Hampshire, in a military establishment I think born in Dublin but as the census was probably filled out by a clerk he may not be too accurate on birthplace or maybe he joined up in Dublin.

The workhouse in Dundalk was on the Ardee Road which may be in Haggardstown, different spelling than yours. The catholic registers for Haggardstown do not appear to be available for the year in question on http://registers.nli.ie/ They are not an easy read.

Irish civil records commenced in 1864 so the births should be registered in the General Registry Office. It strikes me there is no way the lady who died in India had 17 children, think she was only 32. THe subscription sites I checked did not have that number of Boltons born in Louth. I see on this site http://www.jbhall.freeservers.com/index.html there was a Clive Bolton, a Colonel who was from Dundalk and served in the 1st World War. Also other Bolton hits but not as many as you think as there is a Bolton Square in Drogheda around the corner from the orphanage as it turns out, oddly also when we moved here 35 years ago we were assigned the orphanage telephone number to our house and were getting phone calls for about 20 years after.

I will do some more searching but if you can give any more detail it would assist.

    Regards

  • Hello, Christina - I've just been researching this family for a 3rd cousin of mine. My cousin John is the grandson of John Bolton, born 1896, and I think he is the brother of your Joseph.

Parents were William Bolton and Ann Smyth, who married 1874 in Louth (address often listed as the workhouse.) John tells me there were 22 children in the family, although I haven't found that many births. At any rate, the family was very large.

Your Joseph's brother John married Margaret Keating in 1924 in Tullamore.

They can't be found on the 1901 or 1911 census because they were living in the workhouse, and are thus only listed by their initials.

One brother James married Alice Murry in Dundalk in 1900. Another brother Patrick married Marianne McNally in 1895 in Dundalk. I'm told that other family members went to England.

I'm sure John would be interested in connecting with you , as he and his uncle are very interested in this family and their history. They are also having a hard time tracing the family.

    Kind regards,

    Mary Helen McCarthy

  • William Bolton and Ann Smyth/smith, who married 1874 in Louth are my 3rd great grand parents,
i can only find 15 children myself.
Their son Patrick born 1874 married Marianne McNally in 1895 in Dundalk.
They had 7 children, 4 boys 3 girls what I’m aware of.
The second oldest (My great grandfather) william john bolton born 9th april 1903 dundalk, he was a seaman and met my great grandmother lilian edith tyzack and married in march 1938 in hebburn tyne and wear.
my great grandfather died 28th jan 1986 (one month before i was born) They then had 10 children, 6 boys 4 girls, my grandad was the 3rd oldest, william john bolton born 7th may 1941 who married my nanna Elizabeth Courtney and went on to have 1 girl 3 boys.
My mother the eldest and only daughter Angela Elizabeth Wilson (nee Bolton) born 21 april 1967 married my father Christopher wilson now have 7 children, 6 girls 1 boy me being the oldest and 13 grandchildren up to now, and we still all live in the north east tyne and wear england.

I do get a bit puzzled on my bolton side in some ways as patrick bolton my 2nd great grandfather changed his name to mccabe, if you can find anything out id love to hear back.

I do know that sir Richard bolton lord chancellor of ireland (1570-1648) is my 11th great grandfather.

    Kind regards,

    Ashley wilson.
