My ggg-grandfather (Thomas SHORTALL) was born in Gibraltar in 1811. Various records tell me that his ancestry is Irish, so I assume his parents were there because his father was in the British military. By 1841 he was living in Liverpool (UK) and was married to Bridget NOON (apparently also of Irish ancestry but born about 1811 in Shetland). They had many children, including one who died at the age of two in 1844. That child's obituary called him the "son of Thomas Shortall, late of Wicklow, Ireland." Another of Thomas and Bridget's sons was my great-great-grandfather, Richard SHORTALL, who emigrated to New York around 1865 (and whose name was sometimes listed as SHORTELL).
An Ireland Reaching Out volunteer told me that only one Shortall turned up in the British armed forces in that timr frame. The following is the only Shortall that turns up in the British armed forces over the timeline, His name is Thomas Shortall and he was born 1771

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Reaching Out and apologies for the long delay in getting back to you.
Do you know the religion of your ancestor?

Clare,
I beleive they were Catholic, as their children were baptized in ROman Catholic churches in Liverpool.
Thank you!

Hi Tom
I had a look on rootsireland.ie but there are no Shorthall marriages in Co. Wicklow that fit the period and would account for a son born in 1811 or thereabouts. Even assuming there were older siblings, the earliest male Shorthall marriage is in the 1830s which is too late. If you haven't already, I would consult with the National Archives in Kew, London to see if they have any further military information on Thomas: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/help-with-your-research/
Best wishes
