My great grandfather Joseph Henry Monaghan is supposed to have been born in Bantry, Ireland in 1850. According to his marriage certificate his parents were supposedly William Monaghan and Annie Bee. According to his death certificate [filled out by his relatives] His father was Joseph Henry Monaghan also but I think this is an error. He migrated to England and then to Maryborough, Australia and then to Sydney. He may have served as a stoker on a British naval ship and jumped ship in Queensland.

Would anyone know of any Monaghans in your parish that may know the history of this family?

  • Hi Greg

    me again, I searched Griffiths Valuation here done in the 1850 and concentrated on the one name Bee as it is so unusual and the only one listed was wait for it, in Cavan, I searched Cavan for Monaghans also and got 121 hits, not necesarily 121 different people but a lot nonetheless.

    I found four Monaghans in Cork but none in Bantry, one in the City, one in Youghal in east Cork, and two others.

    See http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=nameS…;

    The registers I already listed are still good to go so maybe better luck in the later period.

    There are 7 Bees in the 1901 census, none in Cavan or Cork. See http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/

    Find My Past lists a lot of Bees but the vast majority are in trade directories and I do not believe they are people as I could find none, there was on marriage whihc appears to be Prostestant and two court appearances in Cork, one as a victim in Cork Cityand another saying the defendent was born in Kinsale, but no Annies or similiar. Also a Biddy Bee mother to a Dwyer on an application taken from the census of 1841 or 1851, these I think are pension applications but the applicant is the son. You might try this unusual name in the Family Search site which is free.

    The Protestant records will appear here in due course which may be a long time due http://ireland.anglican.org/about/168

    Not all there records survive either, hate to end on a negative but if you have any questions please ask.
