McMillan/Marsh

Hello Christy, 

Can you give us names and approximate dates for your great grandparents who travelled in the 1880's.  There are relatively good records for people around that time.  Civil records began in Ireland in 1864 and parish records usually started approx 1830 or so.  Some older parishes may go back to late 1790's and some parishes only start around 1840's.  So there is a very good chance of us finding your folks in the 1800.

I wouldn't hold out much hope for earlier records of 1702 .  

Look forward to getting more information on the Murphys.  Names , dates, or places where you think they may have come from.

There are 3 townlands named Ballynacree in Co Antrim. All are near Ballymoney. There’s Ballynacree Beg, Ballynacree More and Ballynacree Skein. You can see where they are using the maps on Griffiths Valuation:

Joseph Henry Murphy was born 25 Dec 1893 in Omaha, Nebraska.

According to my Mother's note in my baby book, Joseph was born to

Daniel Patrick Murphy who was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1858

and Katherine Margarette born in Dublin, Ireland in 1868

I'm guessing that Katherine Murphy listed as widow of Danl P in 1924 in Danville, Illinois is the same person.  But, I also have Katie McDonald with son Joseph (7 yrs) in census for 1900 in Montana.  I don't know if that is Katie already widowed or just a red herring.

I just watched a short tour documentary on Ireland that pointed out just how close parishes and towns are in Ireland.  We could be on our tour and pass right through McMillan/Marsh parish without knowing it.  I will be recording info I just got from you, Elwyn, so that we might get a feel for the area before our tour.

I have performed a quick search for a marriage record for Daniel and Katherine but as we don't have her surname it is almost impossible to find which record pertains to your family.

As Joseph Henry was born in the states, I don't have any access to his record.  Would it be possible for you to apply to the birth registrar for a copy of his birth certificate?  This would yield us much information.  Once we have definite parents names it should just be a matter of course to find the marriage record for his parents.

Do you know if he was the first born?  Or are there siblings that may have been born here in Ireland?  Were they roman catholic or church of Ireland?   If there are other children born here then we may be able to find them as we would have the father's name.  Have you for his baptism record?  I don't know if you live near where their parish was or if you are on the other side of the country.

Anyway Christy, the records should be there both civil and church but the key we need to unlock them is Joseph Henry's birth cert.  As you are coming to Ireland it would be such a shame not to be able to find the area your ancestors lived in, so please try your best to get the birth cert.  Once I have definite information  I can hopefully find what you are looking for.  

In the meantime, you may want to look at www.familysearch.org which give indexes to bmd records.  www.irishgenealogy.ie  (free site) which covers dublin city.  www.rootsireland.ie (subscription site) which covers dublin county.  However, having briefly looked through these, you would be wasting your time until we know Katherine's surname.

You are so kind.  Thank you for your help and guidance.

I don't live near Omaha, Nebraska and apparently my grandparent didn't live there long either.  I have searched state records, federal census, and found so little info.  I have not resorted to applying for birth certificate but it does seem the next likely course to take.  I have spent many hours on this endeavor and it would be wonderful if I could come up with something concrete.

I have followed familysearch.org links to no avail.  I have a subscription to myheritage as well.  I really am trying to the best of my abilities.

Omaha happens to be in a location that makes me wonder whether my grandfather was born there on Christmas day because his mother couldn't find a hospital where she lived.  It might be that she lived in Ohio.  I've searched records there, too, but, as I said have had no luck.

I suspect my great-grandparents did not have any religious affiliation in the USA.  I know it would be very helpful to know that information.

I agree that it would be nice to know whether I have cousins in Dublin since we likely will be spending a few extra days there before our tour.  As to whether there were other children born to Daniel and Katherine before they arrived in the USA, I don't have any concrete info about that either.

Thanks again for your help and suggestions.  I'll post here if I happen to find anything more concrete.

Are there any records that are available from that time period?

The Grange that you refer to is probably Grange of Ballyscullion. There was a Quaker Meeting House there from the 1700s until about 1901 when the last Quaker in the area died, and the Meeting House closed. There are copies of its records in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast and at the Quakers Provincial office in Lisburn.
