A Margaret Penny was born/baptised 9 November 1797 to John Penny and Mary Welsh according to a record listed on Ancestry.com.
The death record of my ancester, Margaret Penny in 1865 in Tranent , Haddington, Scotland gives her parent's names as John Penny and Jane Welsh and her age as 73 which would make her birth date 1792. I have always assumed the son who registered her death did not know his grandmother's name, nor his mother's actual age as census records seem to suggest 1797 (although they do vary from 1797 to 1800)
She married James Rodger 20 March 1814 in Saul Parish, Downpatrick before migrating to Scotland and had 10 children there between 1822 and 1842.
I expected there may have been other children born in Ireland between 1814 and 1822. However, only those born in Scotland appear in Census records.
Can anyone suggest where to find more information on the Rodger of Penny families before they left Ireland?

No Penny or Rodger households in the tithes in Saul in 1833. Some Welsh farms in Tollynear & Ballintougher.

Probably tells you that the Rodger and Penny families had no land. Probably agricultural labourers/weavers. The Saul area is largely agricultural and the majority of people there would have worked on the land.

There are no church records for Saul for the period you need. Very hard to suggest what sources you could research to take this further.

I take it your information was derived from the parish registers of St.Margaret's, Church of Ireland, Downpatrick.
In addition to the available sources below for further research you may try and gain access to the available newspaper sources such as the Down Recorder or the Northern Star if an announcement was printed in either.
Records available are baptisms 1733- 1854, marriages 1700- 1736 & 1740- 1874, burials 1719-1867 at PRONI MIC /1/39; Linenhall Library, Belfast has a register of deaths (1693-1862) and marriages (1727-1862) of persons in Downpatrick and neighbourhood -personal visits only ; LDS film #0823636 was baptisms 1733-1854, marriages 1700-1875 & burials 1719- 1867; UHF ( http://www.ancestryireland.com/ ) has baptisms 1749-1857 & burials 1752-1785, 1795 -1829, 1837-1871; http://www.rootsireland.ie have baptisms 1749 -1857 & burials 1752-1785;1795-1829; 1837-1871

Thank you both for this information. It looks like I will need to make a visit to PRONI. Margaret's death record gives her father's occupation as Farmer, although he was possibly a farm labourer
