My G-G-G-Uncle, John Washington was supposed to have been born in Kinvara, Galway (as cited on his death cert.) around to James Washington and Bridget (nee Connolly) around 1838.

His brother, my G-G-Grandfather, Michael Washington, born to the same parents, Galway (assume same parish as John) around 1839.

Both brothers migrated to Victoria, Australia c. 1860, John married in 1861 to Mary Duggan and Michael in 1863 to Margaret Toohey (who came from Clare County, Ireland)

Am wondering if anyone knows info regarding?

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

There is a gap in the RC records for Kinvara from May 1837-June 1843. I searched Roots Ireland for the baptismal records for John and Michael but could not locate them which is likely due to the gap. I searched before and after the gap for other children of James Washington but there were no records.  http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0632

  • Hi Roger,

I appreciate you taking a look for me! I do know that their parents James Washington and Bridget (nee Connolly) went onto live in the area after Michael and John immigrated to Australia around 1860, and I guess James and Bridget died in that parish in subsequent years.

I was going to come to Galway a number of years ago, but because of a lack of records in regard to my John and Michael, I did not follow through, because of the lack of records.

Civil registration of deaths started in 1864. I looked for james and Bridget Washington and there were no index records in the Gort registration district. The closest records were up in Strokestown registration district in Roscommon.

    David,

My husband's Washington family is from Co Roscommon. He has done DNA testing, both y and autosomal. If you have results, it would be interesting to see if the two of you are related. His 3ggrandparents were James and Catherine Washington, of Kilglass parish, Lavagh townland. Their son Edward married Margaret Lee, who was born in neighboring county Leitrim. They were married in 1852 in Roscommon, and emigrated to the US around 1860. John and Michael are common names in his family, although they ARE simply common names.

While I don't know if records exist far back enought to prove a relationship, we might find out through DNA matching. Get in touch if interested.

  • Hello Chris,

I just came across this site, and your post today. Michael Washington was also my Great Great Grandfather. If you are still interested in comparing results, I have also done Autosomal and Y-DNA testing. Washington is a rare ancestral name in Ireland. It would be great to see if we can find a link between our Galway and Roscommon Washington's. I suspect if we had a strong DNA match we would already have discovered each other, but you never know.

    Regards,
    Ben Washington.
