Hanleys or Hanlys in Kiltrustan or Strokestown

I checked on Roots Ireland and found the records for James and William. There was also a Catherine but her mother was shown as Bridget and not Mary so maybe the record is not for your family. The 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Kiltrustan civil parish shows two Peter Hanly records. Not sure if either record is for your ancestor.

This sound a novice question, but how does one make the leap from a Giffiths' listing to determining actual lineage? Is there a method? That is, other than finding living relatives in Ireland that might be able to confirm information?

Hi Bridget!

Not a novice question. You can't make a connection without other info. Griffiths allows you to identify townland/parish possibilities. There are Griffiths Revisions books that show how the properties changed hands in the years after the actual survey. Right now these books are only available in Dublin or through micorfilm through the Mormon Church (which is a tedious process). The good news is that we expect the books to be digitized and available online sometime this year. (They are available online right now for the six counties in Northern Ireland).

O nly seeing this post, I'm from the kiltrustan area, Borefield, , there were Kearns in this townland, many of whom are still around,

Since I originally posted here, I've been able to discover a great deal about the Hanleys and Kearns of Borefield. I am still struggling to confirm a generation prior. That is, Peter Hanley and Mary Kearns are the furthest back that I've been able to confirm with certainty. Mary Kearns was formerly Tiernan. Her first husband, John Tiernan, disappears from records prior to 1846, and presumably died. Peter Hanley and Mary Kearns married in 1846.

I am working with the assumption that Martin Hanley, who appears in tithing records in Borefield in 1842, was Peter Hanley's father, though he could have been a brother or other relative instead.

I am also working with the assumption that Mary Kearns had brothers named Patrick and Peter and that their father and mother were Peter Kearns and Bridget Bierne or Byrne. These assumptions come from a wide range of primary sources.

I'm not surprised to hear that Kearns name is still quite common in the area, as I've found some indications of that myself. It would be wonderful to have individuals with whom to communicate that are still in the area and probably descended from the same folks as I! It's also nice to hear directly from someone who is from the area herself! Thank you again for reaching out to me, Margaret!
