I've spent many days on ancestry.com and have a few remaining questions that might best be resolved with the help of someone from the Tullaghobegly parish area  (Lunniagh) and / or Inver.   Sorry in advance for the long post. Questions are in CAPS further below:

At the level of my GGG Grandparents, I've been told that my GGG Grandfather John "Top" Brogan had several children (Frank, James, Maggie, Sarah) with a first wife who died (and I don't know her name).

John Brogan supposedly later married Margaret McGee or M'Gee, and then had my GG Grandfather Philip Brogan (1844 - 1898), his brother Thomas Brogan (1849-1928), and a sister Bridget Brogan Doherty (1850 - ?).    I was told that Daniel Thomas  Brogan (1822-1906) who married Sarah Alice Curragh (Curran) was also a full sibling of Philip / Thomas / Bridget, however, now that I've obtained Daniel's dates of birth and death, I believe he must be a half sibling or something.   (Some of Daniel Thomas's children ended up in Oregon, USA, where Philip and Thomas also ended up, so they have a strong connection.)

A brief biography was written about Thomas Brogan in Oregon (1849 - 1928), in which he indicated his parents always lived on the Emerald Isle and that there were SEVEN children.  (I'd like to figure out which ones were raised together / which ones lived beyond infancy.)   He left home at age 12 for the mines in Philadelphia (and later New Zealand and Oregon).

I HAVE TWO TYPES OF QUESTIONS, in the interest of obtaining clarity about things at the level of my GGG Granfather John Brogan, his wife Margaret McGee and whomever the first wife and children were:

I believe I've found separate Griffith's Valuation pages for John Brogan, Philip Brogan and Daniel Brogan, but I'd REALLY LIKE TO BE ABLE TO CONFIRM IT.   The Ireland Tithe Applotment Books 1823 - 1837 show that a John Brogan leased from Lord George Hill at Luuniagh (Donegal/Kilmacrenan/Tullaghobegly).   (I know that my GG Grandfather Philip was born in Lunniagh because it is on his tombstone in Oregon.  I also know that his younger brother Thomas was born in Bunbeg.  So I believe I'm looking at the right Griffith's valuation pages.)

I also believe my GG Grandfather Philip Brogan is listed in the 1847 - 1864 Griffith's in two places:   first, as leasing land / mountain from Lord George Hill at Carrick (Dongeal / Kilmacrenan / Tullaghobegly) (on a page that also lists some McGees), and perhaps is also listed on a separate page together with what I'm guessing is his brother Daniel, as leasing something at Glashagh from Rev Alexander Nixon. Philip was a sheepherder, at least when he got to Oregon, so what he leased (a mountain) seems to match up with his job.

There is a Margaret Brogan (possibly the McGee Brogan?) listed in the 1847 - 1864 Griffith's in the Parish of Inver, at "Point", with a house and land,   Daniel is separately listed on the same page at Inver / Point, with a house, office and land.  In other family research I have, Daniel's children were mostly all listed as being born at Bunaninver, so I think this fits.

Perhaps someone reading this from Tullaghobegly parish or Inver might know about these families, or might know how I can further clarify whether the pages of Griffith's that I've located match up with my relatives.   Thanks for your patience in reading this.

  • Hi Roger McDonnell,

Thanks for your prior note.   I haven't heard back from anyone about my question.  I'm wondering if you know of anyone else who might have some information about the people mentioned in my post.

I appreciate your note and the work of your organization!

I may also post it where people from Inver might see it, since one of the sons, Daniel Thomas Brogan, and his wife  Sarah Alice Curragh (Curran), had children born in the Inver  / Bunaninver / Crossroads area.  (Among other things, I'm trying to confirm who Daniel's Mom was and things like whether he was the half or whole brother of my GG Grandfather Philip Brogan (1844 - 1898.)

    Sincerely,

    Karen Olson

  • Hi

I have been in touch with someone who suggests the following:

I would advise they contact csgd@eircom.net to get a local viewpoint. That email address refers to a Co-Op Organisation in Gweedore, Co. Donegal. (Tel. No. - 00353749532208) . A contact there would be a Tony McHugh who has a keen interest in genealogical matters.

Although it seems the poster is on correct path, it is worthwhile knowing that the name Philip Brogan was and is common in the Killult/ Craigtown/Rocktown townlands of Tullaghobegley East(see below). The above townlands are in Cross Roads DED.

    Just a point of general information. Historically Tullaghobegley parish consisted of one area until 1834 when the parish was divided into Tullaghobegley East and Tullaghobegley West.  Tullaghobegley East was further amalgamated with Raymunterdoney which then returned to its ancient parish name of Cloughaneely (Falcarragh & Gortahork are villages in the parish); The ancient church and graveyard of Tullaghobegley is approx. one mile from the village of Falcarragh. The townlands of Tullaghobegley Irish and Tullaghobegley Scotch are in Cloughaneely but are better known locally as Oldtown and Meenderry;

Tullaghobegley West is nowadays better known as Gweedore including the small villages of Derrybeg and Bunbeg. This parish also include the townlands mentioned by the poster such as Lunniagh, Glashagh, Bunaninver etc.

  • Hi Berny and Claire,

Thank you both so much for responding!  This is valuable information regarding the area and names.

I look forward to talking with you Berny about our family connection.  I'm so glad you got in touch!

I haven't been online lately because my Dad had a stroke and we are focused on his recovery, but I'd like to know how we can talk about this perhaps in the next few weeks.  Is there a chat area for this site or how do I give you my contact information Berny?  Thanks again!

  • HI Karen,

Do you have a Gedmatch number? Some of my documents place my McGee's in those locations. Additionally, I have many Brogans on my Ancestry DNA matches.

    Thanks,
