  • Hi Denis

The Tithe Applotments (free at titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/) have 3 John Allens in Westmeath in 1826-34:

Surname Forename Townland/Street Parish County Year

    AllenJohn Ballintew Kilmacnevan Westmeath1834

    AllenJohn Ballinderra Multyfarnham Westmeath1826

    AllenJohn Walshestown Mullingar Westmeath1833

Griffiths Valuation has 90 Allens in Westmeath in 1854 including 2 in Castletownkindalen & 1 in Castletowndevlin

I couldn't find any in the early irish Censuses however

  • Denis:

Below are transcriptions from Roots Ireland for Richard and Elicia. There was also a John in 1839 and Patrick in 1841. Did not see Edwrad. Here is the link to the parish register http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0913  I would search for your family records. As Col indicated, the 1854 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Castletownkindalen civil parish does show two Allens including a John. Possibly this is your ancestor assuming he was not deceased before 1854.

  • Hi Denis,

We would love it if Roger and Col were Galway residents! They do so much in helping people of Irish descent connect back with their place of origin they deserve honourary titles.  Please reach out again when you know the details of your trip and, and we would be delighted to put you in touch with a volunteer on the ground in Westmeath.

  • Denis:

I use Google Maps for the Republic. Fermanagh may be a little more difficult because the maps don't show townlands in my experience.

  • I am interested in the Allen surname in IRELAND. Please see the below inforamtion and reply if you or someone you know would have interest in the project.

The ALLEN y-DNA Project & The ALLEN Guild of One Name Studies

The Allen DNA Project is partnering with the Allen Guild of One Name Studies in an exciting new Research Endeavor. The Allen DNA Project is a USA based group, but is very interested in expanding our membership to a world-wide audience by actively seeking out Allens from England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Ireland, Mainland Europe, Canada, Australia, New Zealand or anywhere else on the planet. Additionally, any spelling variation of the Allen surname is welcome: Allan, Allyn, Allin, etc.

To this point, FREE yDNA 12 marker tests will be made available to any males carrying the Allen surname and residing outside the United States who are willing to join the project and participate in the testing. This involves no blood or needles, only a cotton swab rubbed on the inner cheek.

The only requirement for a free yDNA test is a known Allen/Allan (any spelling) lineage to at least the participant’s Great Grandfather Allen/Allan (any spelling) in any country. Additionally, The Allen DNA Project is setting aside a specific Sub-group within the Project with a full commitment of assistance from Allen Project Co-Administrator Dr. Eric Allen who will be overseeing this specific International Sub-group.
