Hello

Not sure I'm on the right board - but I'm searching for my Great great grandfathers family there in Ireland !

Don't have too many details on Robert - thought to have been born c 1854 , protestant most likely

Immigrated to New Zealand around 1870's

Occupation - carpenter

Any help would be grand !

 Have a great day

 Regards

  • Looking at Griffiths Valuation for 1861 there’s just one Adamson household in Little Ballymena. That was a George Adamson. He had plot 13c which was a weaver/agricultural labourer’s cottage on John McMillan’s farm. If it’s still standing today, that cottage would be on the Lisglass Rd, just east of the junction with Rushvale Rd. About half way between Ballynure and Carrickfergus.

George remains listed as the tenant of that cottage till 1871 after which he leaves. See:

    http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/search_the_archives/val12b.htm

I searched for a possible death for George and the only one I found in the Larne registration area (which covers Little Ballymena) was on 28.1.1883 aged 72.  You can view the original certificate on-line on the GRONI website, using the “search registrations” option:

    https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk

You will need to open an account and buy some credits. It costs £2 (sterling) to a view a certificate.

I also noticed a George Adamson, whose father was also George, who married Catherine McDowell in Carrickfergus on 2.12.1875. I wondered if he might be a brother to your Robert?

    1901 census:

     1911:

    I found this probate abstract:

Administration of the Estate of George Adamson late of Irish Quarter West, Carrickfergus, County Antrim, Dairyman, who died 21 June 1921 granted at Belfast 25 November 1921 to Katie Adamson, the widow. Effects £198 16s.

(Full probate file will be in PRONI, in Belfast).

Statutory birth registration only started in Ireland in 1864 so you won’t get a birth certificate for Robert or any sibling born before that year. You would need to search church records. Family were Presbyterian so, assuming it’s your family, you would need to search the baptism records for the Little Ballymena area for Robert’s baptism. There are quite a few Presbyterian churches in that area and few of their records are on-line. However there are copies of most in PRONI. However a personal visit is required to search them.
