I am researching my grandmother Nora McBride who was supposedly born in County Cavan in 1873-1874. She immigrated to the USA and married my grandfather James William Haran, from County Sligo, who immigrated to the USA in 1882.

Name: Nora Mary McBride

Father: Bernard (Barney) McBride

Mother: Nancy (Annie) Cassidy

I have more information after her immigration to the USA but none before that and I don't know the year she immigrated

Thank You,

James Haran

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched on Roots Ireland from 1865-1881 for a Nora McBride birth or baptismal record (including variant spellings for Nora) in Co. Cavan with a mother with the surname Cassidy and got no record. I also searched on Find My Past and did not see a civil birth index record for a Nora McBride ( including variant spellings for Nora). The closest was an Eleanor McBride in 1879.

I see that you have posted in five different parishes in Co. Cavan. Since all parish postings end up on the main message board, I will be annotating the other messages as duplicates. Any other clues. Do you know when her parents married?

I have found a 75 year old handwritten document listing the children of Bernard (Barney) and Nancy (Annie) Cassidy. The order is as written here: Bernard born 1850, died 1909. His parents: Father-Owen McBride, Mother-Norah McGrath (note spelling of Nora). Nancy born 1858, died 1931. Father-Cormick Cassidy, Mother-???    BOTH BORN IN IRELAND AND DIED IN BUTTE, MONTANA,USA.

CHILDREN: NORA, B:1873-1876 (ACCORDING TO HER DEATH CERTIFICATE), ANNE, B:1883,  MARY, B:???,  OWEN, B:1882,  JOE, B:???,  ELIZABETH:, B: 1884,  CATHERINE: B; 1888.  It appears they all immigrated to the USA and ended up in Buttr, Montana, USA at one time or another. Butte was an extremely large mining town and had a large Irish population. THANK YOU,   JAMES HARAN

I've done searching for Nora and various siblings and I'm not coming up with any good records in Cavan. I also note that there were a good number of McBrien records in Cavan so I don't know if that might be the spelling of the surname in Ireland.

  • I will keep searching and try NLI. For all I know they might have come from the North and used Couny Cavan on their documents. Since none of their names come up in yoour search that leaves a big question mark. Do you know anything about the "new 10 million records" that FindMyPast just released, and do you have any suggestions where I might look next?  Thanks,James Haran

  • James:

Find My Past and Ancestry just released an integrated data base of all RC parish records that are available. These records are more comprehensive than Roots Ireland because Roots does not have a few counties and for Clare and Wexford only partial records. The data base is free on FMP until Monday and to the end of the month on Ancestry. When you search make sure you check variant names for the first name and last name.

  • James,

I have also had a look for these births and for the parents marriage but can’t find them either.

Regarding whether the family might have come from the north and used Cavan on their documents, I am not clear they might have wanted to do that. (If it was something to do with concealing that they had lived in Northern Ireland bear in mind that it didn’t exist till 1922, so in the 1800s the whole country was just Ireland. Not sure why you would want to say you came from another part of the country but perhaps there was a reason. I have never encountered it in genealogy though). But in any event the marriage is not showing up anywhere in Ireland, not just in Cavan.

Regarding the records released by fmp, these are the RC parish records which are currently available on the NLI site. What FMP have done is to index them and put them on their site. They generally cover the period from the start of each parishes records up to the early 1880s. No harm in searching them for Nora and her siblings baptisms, and for their parents marriage. Between 1864 and c 1881 you would have both the civil birth records and the RC parish records for people. This is the period you are interested in. So its good to have 2 sets of records. If your family doesn’t appear in either then there certainly does appear to be something askew with the information. Possibly, as Roger has suggested, the family surname changed between Ireland and the USA.

For information, I had a look at the 1900 Federal census. The family were in Silver Bow, Montana. That shows Barney arriving in the US in 1884. Annie and 4 children followed in 1890. The 4 childrens birth details are given as: Elizabeth Aug 83; Katie Aug 1885; Owen Oct 1879 & Joseph Dec 1880. I note that Barney & Nancy/Annie were married 25 years so married around 1875. Also that Barney was naturalised. Have you looked for his US naturalisation file to see what he gave as his place of birth?

  • Elwin, Thank You, you are a wealth of information. You have already given more information than I have been able to find In almost 10 years. I don't know why they would change their name to immigrate to McBride, they are both obviously Irish names. But I have already been through this with my grandfather. I am working on my Irish history and obviously have a long way to go, so much information and so little time, I am pushing 70. all the documents I have found point to Cavan, but nothing legitimately from Ireland. I use most all of the USA search engines to no avail, most have so many "results" it's like finding a needle in a haystack. I am open to any and all of your suggestions. Many Thanks for your reply,  James Haran
