Hi,

I have been studying the way County Sligo was divided. Dromore West was the civil registration area that included parishes of Templeboy and  Kilglass and many others. My question is that if I found information about the Culkin family from parish records for Templeboy and then I saw records stating Culkin of Dromore West could I presume that they may be the same records same person? Dates and names are very similar but not always the same.

I have been trying to match families and their direct families by using records and matching informants both when Culkin families had children and when the informants got married and had children. There are many holes in the records. My g g grandmother Cecelia/Celia Culkin came from County Sligo, born 1851. I can find no records for her from Ireland but on her marriage certificate in Victoria, Australia, she lists her parents as James Culkin and Bridget Kennedy. I found four other children born to these parents in the Templeboy Parish Records. Is there anyway of really connecting my g g grandmother Cecelia Culkin to this family without finding an Irish Birth entry?

Thanks

Michael

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Here is the parish register for Templeboy http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0756   You note that there is a gap in baptismal records from 1838-1868  What years were the records for the four siblings of Cecelia?  If you find a civil index record showing Dromore West and it fairly matches the church record, you likely have the correct record. Particularly if there are no other civil index records around the same time.

  • Hello Roger,

Thank you for your response, very much appreciated. I have been able to gain access to the records that are available for Templeboy. I have even improved my reading of latin thanks to the records. I am not sure what some records for Dromore West are for. Are they the records for the town or the PLU District?

The 4 Baptism dates I found for James Culkin and Bridget Kennedy as parents are 1829 to 1838. A Patrick Culkin was baptised in 1835. A Patrick Culkin came to Australia in 1863 and he listed himself as 22 years. When he passed away in 1896 he was 57 years old. On his marriage certificate when he got married in 1867 he said he was 25 years. He could not read or write but states his father is James Culkin a farmer in County Sligo and mother is Bridget Kennedy.

Cecelia/Celia Culkin on a passenger manifest states she is coming to Australia to join her brother Patrick a farmer in 1866. Her age is listed as 19 years old. When she marries in 1869 her age is listed as 19 years old again. I have read about the history and the need for under aged girls to be accompanied so I think this is why her age may have varied. Cecelia like Patrick could not read or write but stated on her marriage certificate that her father was James Edward Culkin farmer County Sligo and Bridget Kennedy.

I would like to know also how so many people are able to join the dots of what Culkin belongs to what family when so many records are not available? James Edward Culkin's father according to so many family trees was Patrick "Big Red" Culkin. Could this information come from a family bible or something similar?

Sorry so many questions, would love to be able to join some Irish Dots!

If you are seeing Dromore West on the parish register it is referring to a town and not the PLU.

You make reference to other people. I assume you are referring to Ancestry trees. Not sure where they are getting their information. Could have been passed down from a Bible.

  • Hello,

I am from Templeboy and there was a Culkin family there when I was growing up. The older Catholic parish records from Templeboy are in the Parish name of Kilmacshalgan, as both Templeboy and Dromore West were part of the one parish of Kilmacshalgan until later 1800s. Culkin is a very common name in Dromore West and the family I knew of originated there also. Do you have any further details and maybe I could help you (eg do you have a tow land name maybe?). Happy to assist

  • Hello Michael (et al.),
I'm a fellow Culkin researcher, working on a family from the Ballina area. There's not many of us, I figure we should stick together. My Culkin and yours might be one in the same. I'm in the process of figuring that out through yDNA through Family Tree Dna. The Dromore West Culkin certainly seem to have more research behind them than my lot do.

I don't have much to add here except that the Hearth Money Rolls for the area due south of Dromore West list a Richard McQuilkin in the mid 1600s. This may be the name that becomes Culkin over time (again, yDNA could help here). You may already be aware, but I can dig up the link if you're interested.

Anyhow, hope to hear from any involved here!

    Cheers,
    Thomas Calkins (Culkin)

  • Hello Thomas,

Thank you for message. I have been away so sorry for the lateness of the reply.

I have my DNA with Ancestry and I have only matched with one Culkin family from New York. The person I matched with has not responded to any of my emails. It is the family of Charles Culkin and I always have thought that my Culkin line was the same as this line. I know there are other Culkin's who have done DNA tests but I have no other matches.

I have found no Irish records for my ggreat grandmother, but there are no official records available for Templeboy at the time she was born. No Australian Culkin's have done a DNA test as far as I know. The Culkin's I have spoken to in Australia have had no knowledge of my gg grandmother or have not been really interested. Patrick Culkin who I believe is Cecelia's (my gg grandmother) brother had a big family. Then his children had big families. The Culkin's of Australia trace themselves back to Patrick.

Thanks again for your message. All the best.

    Michael
