I am looking for the portion of my family that DIDN'T come to America around 1877. By looking at death certificates, and searching irishgenealogy.ie, i think I have found a match. Here's what I've got:
My GGrandfather Denis Buckley (b. 7 May1854 d. 8 Sept 1906) came to San Francisco about 1887 with his brother Michael. Denis was a carpenter. I don't know about Michael. Their parents were Denis Buckley and Honora Casey. I find no evidence that any other family ever left Ireland. The church records for Kerry in irishgenealogy.ie shows me a tantalizing match: A couple named Denis Buckley and Honora Casey getting married at about the right time in Kilgarvan, with a Denis and Michael among their children, of about the correct ages. I am looking in Kerry, because that is what is listed on the younger Denis' death certificate and headstone. Denis and Michael don't show up in the 1901 census, because they had already left the country.
Do I stand a chance of finding out if this is really my family?
Thanks,
Denise (Buckley) Crawford

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
It looks like you have the correct family. I looked at the baptismal records for the townland and the official name would either be Dromnycolman or Derrinculig both in Kilgarvan parish. I checked the 1901 census for both townlands and there were no Buckleys listed. Possibly there was a Buckley daughter who married and stayed in the area. I checked the civil death index records in the Kenmare district and there was a Denis Buckley who died in 1885. Possibly this is the father. I was unable to locate a record for Honora. You can get a copy of the death record for around 4 euros from the General Register Office. If you are interested and need instructions, let me know.
You may also want to consider autosomal DNA testing.

Roger,
Thank you for the quick reply. Because I have lived in the United States all my life, I am not sure about how to distinguish townland from parish. But I'm starting to catch on...
Could the townland be Droumaclarig? Via irishgenealogy.ie, I found many baptism records for the children of Denis and Honora Buckley. Many of the sponsors were the same as well, leading me to think they were of the same family. My Denis' mother was listed as Mary Casey, but his sponsor matches Honora's other children, so I'm thinking that could have been a clerical or transcription error.
Here are a couple of screen shots: what do you think?
I would be interested in help to order the death record of the elder Denis, d. 1885. Thank you for the offer, and general help.

The townland is Droumaclarig but the offical spelling would either be Dromnycolman or Derrinculig not sure which.
Go to this link https://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx print out the death form and fill it out to the best of your ability. Include the info from the index record above. Make sure you check the box for a copy only. You have to mail the request to Ireland (address provided when you print the form) but you can ask GRO to e-mail the copy back. I provide a credit card number and have not had any issues.

Hi I am part of the Buckley family from Droumaclarig,Kilgarvan. My name is Geraldine my grandparents were Patrick Buckley and Kate nee O'Brien I am fairly sure that his parents were a Dennis and Honora
My grandparents had five living children the eldest of whom was my mother Bridget, then John,Timmothy,Mary and Kathleen sadly none are still with us
The next farm to the left was Cremins,
the farm down below was also Buckley our cousins
My grandfather Patrick, did go to America for a time when he was a young man he was in Boston, he went home to Ireland for a holiday met my grandmother Kate or Catherine, apparently she did not want to go to America,so they stayed in Droumaclarig and raised their family
All Patrick and Kate's children went to Uk except my uncle John, who never married but looked after his parents Sadly when he died the farm was split and sold off
I have been back back a few years ago with my husband, there was no one staying in the old family home but it had been updated

Geraldine!
So glad to hear from you! I'm looking at my family tree on Ancestry.com, and it looks like your grandfather Patrick was, if not THE youngest, then nearly so. Does that sound right? This makes us second cousins, removed by one generation. (Patrick's brother Denis is my Great Grandfather.) I have a date of birth for Patrick of about 1862? I found this info from irishgenealogy.ie where the parish records are available to search. I see Cremins in as sponsors in baptism records, so that matches up well with what you know.
We have a third cousin Marian who lives in the UK. She tells me that her first cousin owns the family farm. I'm not sure if it is the SAME famly farm...it becomes murky. But her story is that when Denis and Honora died, they left the farm to the two oldest boys, Murty and Tim. (Her direct ancestor is the oldest, Murty) She says the rest of the family went to the USA, with the exception of Patrick, the teacher in Castle Island. The Patrick in her story had a son, Fr Denis Joseph who was ordained in Florida in 1920.
I hope this is enough to be sure that we've got the right family. If you would like to communicate about this more, then email might be more efficient. Can you email me at oddmind@gmail.com? I've got stories and questions!
Thanks,
Cousin Denise

Hi, I have been working on our family history for a number of years and the Buckley name is definately conected to Derrincullig. The Doyles have lived there since back in the 1700s and my first cousin Martin Doyle, his son John and granson Thomas still live there today. My father was born there in 1899 and imigrated to Canada in 1926. I would be happy to help any way I can.
In the 1852 Griffith's List, Catherine Buckley is shound as resident of Derrincullig. I think that DROUMACLARIG is really Derrincullig not Dromnycolman. I would realy apreciate your coments.
Mary Buckley and Daniel Healy had a son Jeremiah at Derrincullig ("Droumaclarig") in 1835. My 2nd grandparents Mary Healy and Jeremiah Hegarty had a son Jeremiah at Derincullig the next year. I think that Mary Buckley and Catherine Buckley were sisters and that Mary Healy and Daniel Healy were sister and brother.
I look foreard to hearing from you.

Michael,
I don't have any Healys or Doyles in my tree at all. I wonder if Mary and Catherine Buckley are sisters of Denis Buckley, my 2nd GGrandfather, also listed above, who died in Kenmare, 1885. Denis was born in Cork, and only came to Kerry about the time of his wedding. I have his first child Murtagh as being born in 1841.
I don't think any of this will help you immediatley, but who knows?
Good luck,
Denise (Buckley) Crawford
