I am currently in Dublin until the end of May '16. I would love to meet a local person who can introduce me to the area and acquaint me with the history of this area. Some details of my ancestor patrick Daniel Howard.
Patrick was born about 1828. Father Daniel (1793-1871); Mother mary Anne Dunn (1802-1866)
he emigrated to Australia in 1854 on the Clipper Cairngorm - he noted his nationality as Scottish.
He married Eliza d'Arcy 1855 in Ballarat, victoria, Australia.
Together they had 11 children: William (1858-1934), Catherine (1860-1930), John Francis (1862-1918), Mary Ann (1864-1930), Patrick Phillip (1866-1920), James Cornelius (1868-1913), Michale francis (1870-1917), Elizabeth (1872-1967), Margaret Mary (1875-1955) MY GREAT GRANDMOTHER, Alicia Agnes (1877-1941), Daniel Mattious (1880-1941)
Recently I found a baptism certificate for a Daniel Howard Aug 17 1836 whose parents were Daniel howard and Mary Ann Dunn so possibly a brother of \patrick my ancestor.

I am also a Howard descended from Patrick (or Christopher?) Howard and Jane Fottrell of Baldoyle. While I would like to trace my family further back, I'd also like to find out more about what the fishing industry would have been like in the 1800's and see if I can trace my family's many trips back and forth across the Atlantic.

The wife of the Patrick Howard on our tree is Mary Anne Dunne. The local library in Baldoyle, The Mall (off Strand Rd), has a few detailed local history books including info on the fishing industry in the area. One book that details info about the fishing industry is 'Baldoyle: a view from the grandstand' by Michael.J. Hurley edited by W.B. Walsh, 1999. I have been told Michael j Hurley has a website.

Thank you for the resource, Maureen. If i find anything that relates to your branch, I will let you know. I suspect that we are doubly related as my great-grandfather Stephen Howard married Mary Anne Fitzsimmons, whose mother was Jane Dunne.

Hi, I was back in Baldoyle library last weekend, I was looking for the old graveyard. The librarian was very helpful. They have a book on the Kilbarrack Graveyard on the Old Coast Rd where the local communities were buried, there are several Howard tombstones that are readable. I was interested in a drawing / memorial to Peter Howard (1654) by Patrick Mulvaney, it reads:
This stone and burial place belon(eth) to Peter Howard of Clontarf. Patrick Howard son of the above Peter who die.. June 1 ....1 aged 10 also cr.. wo.. M.. his son who died young 8' The graveyard was excavated and researched in 2004. This tombstone is authenticated as 1654 because of the type of tombstone (round head). There is a map in the book, Peter's grave is no. 166 and you can find it in the graveyard. I looked up Clontarf it isabout 6 kms from Baldoyle. I was interested because it tells us Howards were in the area before 1654. Maureenmaureen.sexton

Hello,
Well, I believe that J Howard (Johanna) posted above, is my 4th cousin. Christopher Patrick Howard (husband of Jane Fottrell) was a brother to my 2nd great grandmother, Alica Howard. I am very curious about the Howard family in Baldoyle.
Alicia Howard's parents were Willliam Howard (1790) and Bridget Dunne (1796). William's parents were Christopher Howard (circ 1760) and Catherine Green.
I understand (not verified) that Christopher Howard's parents were Andrew Howard and Mary Atkinson. I have no dates or details about them.
I will plan to visit the library to see what else I can find.
Best regards,
Brendan

Michael J. Hurley's books are all available cheaply on Smashwords.
Howard and Fottrell properties are with the Griffith Valuation data inclusive of Baldoyle and Kilbarrack, 1847 - 1864.
Also by googgling https://buried.fingal.ie and clicking on the downloads you can have access to all the burials in the Kilbarrack Graveyard 1877 - 1922, 1922 - 1939, 1939 - 1983. I believe there are later interments on another site that I have not explored.
Jane Fottrell married Patrick Howard in the Church of St Peter and St Paul, Bladoyle, on October 4, 1847. I suspect she was the same Jane baptised in the above parish on April 9, 1812, in which case she was the daughter of Christopher Fottrell and Jane [nee Weakly/Weakley or even Wakely but most often written in church records as Weakly]. I suspect she was the sister of my great great grandmother, Mary Coghlan [nee Weakly] of Kilbarrack. An American branch of that Fottrell family believes Jane's surname was Wheatley but the registers of St Peter and St Paul suggest otherwise. There was once a large list of Fottrells in a website managed by Eugene Fottrell in USA but it has disappeared. Baptismal records for many of Christopher Fottrell and Jane Weakly's children are within the Baldoyle records minus a gap from December 1800 until 1806, years for which entries have been lost. That is unfortunate as I also have an Anne Fottrell who married James Mooney and it appears that her birth/baptism fell within that missing period. Naming her first two children Christopher and Jane, she was likely a sister of Jane Fottrell born 1812.
There was also a Jane Rice who married a Patrick Fottrell in the Howh/Baldoyle Parish on November 9, 1840.
Good luck everyone.
