    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Below is the likely 1901 and 1911 census records for the Mulligan family. It looks like Mary was born closer to 1884 although I was unable to find a baptismal/birth record in Co. Westmeath. I did find the civil marriage index record and the church record of the marriage in 1876 in Delvin.

  • Reviewed 1901 & 1911 Cencus and all makes sense. Bessie was my GrandMother who died when my Father was 3yrs old and Mary was her Sister who was 2yrs younger. I have both Marriage Certif from USA. Both list Peter Mulligan &  Ellen Fagan as Parents. Mary married Patrick J Rooney fr County Sligo in Troy, N.Y. and Bessie Irving H Adams in Troy, N.Y. Now Bessie is not listed in the 1901 Cencus but she was born in1884 and would have been about 17yrs and mabye out of the house as a Servant either in Ireland or USA. I can't trace Her from Ireland or Confirm her Family only the 10yrs in Troy, N.Y. from Marriage to Death.

Any suggestions to proceed would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you, Stephen Adams

Since we last corresponded, the Irish government has provided the images of all civil births starting in 1864, marriages starting 1882 and deaths in 1891. They are at www.irishgenealogy.ie

Based on the subject line of your original message, I thought you were looking for one person who went by Bessie or Mary. Now I realize that Mary was the younger sister of Bessie. Bessie is a nickname for Bridget so I looked for all birth records for a Bridget Mulligan in Ireland from 1879 -1884 and found your grandmother. She was born March 18, 1879. Go to the link below. You may have to sign-in. Bridget is the last record on the page.

  • Thank you so much for all the help and especially this information. A couple of Questions, can you tell me how the 1st column reads, the Parish etc. Also the profession box reads "HERD" what is this? Looks like Rose & Mark Fagan were present at the Birth and it was in Caddah, is this correct? My Dad's Sister who's burial plot I just located was "Rose" She died at Birth.

If Mary Mulligan was younger can we connect her to this Family also because I know and meet my Father's cousin, Mary's Son Bessie died in 1920 and Mary in 1918 here in Troy, N.Y.

Would Delvin be any where near Cadamstown because I have copies of the Census of 1901 House 12 in Cadamstown with the Mulligans and Cencus 1911 House 4 in Cadamstown and it's been a very interesting connection so far.

I would assume that all the children would have been born and Baptized in the sams Parish is this correct. Looks like Killogh

    Thanking you in advance,

The family lived in the townland of Johnstown in the civil parish of Killulagh which is in the northeast corner of Co. Westmeath not far from Co. Meath. (that is the info in Column).

Herd is someone who is responsible for tending cattle or sheep a shortened form of shepherd.

The column 8 info is saying that Rose Fagan from Caddagh townland was present at birth. Caddagh is a townland in Castletowndelvin civil parish which is just to the northeast of Killulagh civil parish. Likely Rose was her mother or older sister who was with her and assisted at the home birth. Rose could not write her name so the registrar showed an X for "her mark"

The RC church for the area was Delvin. The RC parish was also know as Killulagh or Killeagh. Likely all the baptisms were in that parish.

The Cadamstown that I'm aware of is in Co. Offaly which is south of Westmeath.

Here is a link to Mary's 1883 birth record. By that time the family had moved to Bracklin townland within Killulagh parish.

Thank you again for all this valueable information. I noticed that the RC Chuch St. Livinus in Killulagh was rebuilt in 1894.

Because I am searching dates of birth before that date (1894) I assume that St. Livinus  RC Church was destroyed      somehow.  Now if Bridget & Mary were baptized in Killulagh parish would the records still be available to search.

Could you tell me if St. Livinus was the only church possible for the Baptisms.

    Thank you, Stephen T. Adams
