I am looking for any information on a John & Johanna Hogan who traveled to Canada aboard the Elizabeth in 16th of May 1825 , The ship carried 210 persons from the Cove of Cork. The Manifest shows John Hogan to be a "reduced farmer", he was 35 yrs.,she being 32 yrs.. Their former residence is listed as Carrigadownane,Cork. It also lists a Lord Ennismore as their sponsor or overlord. Thank You !

  • Hello Kingsley

as you are no doubt aware Irish records at this remove at virtually non existant. The place Carrigadowane I cannot find I thought it might be Carrigohane but that does not fit with outher stuff. There is a list of Cork Townlands on Wikipedia but it is very large and you need to look at them all starting with "C" to see if there are any near misses.

I searched Lord Ennnismore and found a Baron Ennismore whose seat mainly in Convamore, Cork which appears to be between Mallow and Fermoy but he had lands across Cork and Kerry. However from the website Landed Estates his place in Convamore was refurbished or rebuilt in the early 19th century and maybe he assisted passages to clear land. See http://landedestates.nuigalway.ie/LandedEstates/jsp/estate-show.jsp?id=… It lists various houses and their history but I see under Ballyellis House that a Lord Ennismore is listed.

You could contact the library in Cork county which has newspapers some from the period, it is on the Carrigohane Road incidently. http://www.corkcoco.ie/co/web/Cork%20County%20Council/Departments/Libra… Under genealogy you can email them but I think you have to visit in person to see the old papers.

Also see this site for locations if you visit but remember records are very scarce. There is a possible chance the National Achives may have Ennismore's papers but again you would need ot visit to see them and they may not be catalogued in any order.

    Regards
