David Woods Kennedy was born at Kilclief ca. 1818 to William Kennedy and Mary (Woods) Kennedy. On 9 November 1839 he was married at Regent Street Presbyterian Church in Newtownards to Mary Coulter (Cultra).  She was born ca. 1820 in Killyleagh, the daughter of William Coulter and Ann (Rea) Coulter.  I am seeking information about David's parents William and Mary Kennedy.  They were living in Newtownards (Wallace's Deed) at the time of David's marriage.  Also, I am seeking information about William Coulter and his wife Ann Rea.  William is shown as being deceased in 1839 when his daughter Mary was wed.  Ann Rea Coulter was living at the time and was living in Newtownards as well, possibly with daughters Grace, Margaret and Jane.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  • John,

There’s a mention of your David Kennedy on Ros Davies site, in connection with the baptism of his son Henry:

If Mary Coulter was born in Killyleagh, and was Presbyterian, then you could search the Killyleagh Non Subscribing Presbyterian church records. They start in 1812 and were the only Presbyterian church in the town around her birth in 1820. There’s a copy of the records in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast. I don’t think they are on-line anywhere and so a personal visit might be required to look for the baptism.

Difficult to say which church David would have been baptised in (again assuming he’ was Presbyterian). Possibly Strangford. Unfortunately they have no records earlier than 1845 so if that was the Kennedy family church it may not be possible to locate nay church records for them.
