Hannah Holloway (nee Murphy) was my great great grandmother, her father being William Murphy (died 1920).  She married Richard William Holloway who was serving with the British Army (West Yorkshire Regiment) on 15 July 1890 in Fermoy.  They had five children, Mary Ann (my great grandmother, who was born in Preston in 1891 before Richard left the Army and the family returned to Fermoy), Ellen, Kate, Richard William and Hannah Margaret.  Unfortunately Hannah died young in 1911 when they were living at 3 Grattan Terrace. Richard also died young in 1901. Mary Ann went to work in London but returned to look after her siblings when Hannah died.  It was then that she met Joseph Jones, who was serving with the Royal Field Artillery, and they married in Fermoy on 9 January 1913. They were then posted to Cahir, co. Tipperary before Joe was sent to France in 1914 and Mary Ann moved to London to be nearer to Joe when he got leave.  I'm looking for more information about Hannah Holloway (nee Murphy) and her family e.g. Mother and siblings, I am led to believe that her brothers emigrated to the US.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Do you have a copy of the 1890 marriage record and does it show where Hannah was living? Trying to find marriage records for a William Murphy in Cork is problematic but if you narrow down the area, it should help.

Unfortunately not, checking my records I can actually only find the Civil Registrations Marriage Index which confirmed that they were married between 1 Jul and 30 Sep.  Do you know where I may be able to obtain it?

    Many thanks

Go to this link https://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx   print out the marriage form and fill it out to the best of your ability. Include the info from the index record and make sure you ask for a copy only, You have to mail the request to Ireland (address provided when you print the form) but you can aks GRO to e-mail the copy back. A copy costs around 4 euros. I always provide a credit card number and have not had any issues.

I now have a copy of their marriage record (see attached) which confirms their marriage date as 15 July 1890.  Hannah Murphy was living in Duntaheen, Fermoy if that helps?

    Many thanks

From the marriage record, it appears in 1890 the family was living in Duntahane townland near Fermoy. I went back to Roots Ireland and found an 1870 baptismal record for a Hannah Murphy- father William Murphy and mother Johanna Rorke. Not sure if this is the correct record (see below). The baptism was in the Glantane RC church to the north of Fermoy. Here is a link to the register for the parish  http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0055   I found 10 siblings for William and Johanna as follows: Margaret 1857 Ellen 1861 Denis 1863 Mary 1865 Michael and William 1866 Hannah 1870 John 1872 Patrick 1874 Ellen 1875 and Elizabeth 1877  I would go thru the register to see if these records appear to be for your family. I note that there were two Ellens so possibly two families ith a mother with the surname Rorke or the 1861 Ellen died young.

Maybe this is William in 1901? http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Cork/Fermoy_Urban/Bog_Lane…

Thanks Roger that is really helpful.

Have started to look through the parish register but struggling to find all the siblings.  I wondered about that census record as well but haven't been able to verify it as yet.

All your help is much appreciated.

    Many thanks

  • HANNAH HOLLOWAY NEE MURPHY

Hannah Holloway's  (Murphy) mother was called Ellen. Hannah Holloway was listed as present at her death in William Street, Fermoy on 21 April 1893.

I am interested in her as my grandfather was called Patrick Murphy and his father was called William Murphy.  Patrick also had a son called William and a 1st born daughter called Ellen amongst others, including my father Patrick Murphy who was born in August 1900 in Fermoy. The family lived in Fermoy in William Street in 1901 Census.

I don't know if they are related to Hannah Murphy but the names seem to add up. Plus Hannah had a daughter Ellen and a son William.  I have searched for a Hannah Murphy birth with parents William and Ellen around 1869-70 with little luck.

    Thank you
