I have found the baptism record of my GGgrandfather Robert "Red Robin" Johnston in the Presbyterian Church of Castledawson. From there I posted on RootsWeb and was given the following information:
James Johnston of Broagh & Descendants
1740 Protestant Householders Returns:
James Johnston, Termoneeny Parish (probably at Broagh townland)
The Crawfurd Peerage: With Other Original Genealogical, Historical, And Biographical Particulars Relating To The Illustrious Houses Of Crawfurd And Kilbirnie
By Alexander Maxwell Adams
John Johnston of Castle-Dawson in the parish of Magherafelt, barony of Loughinshillin, county of Londonderry, in the kingdom of Ireland, came before me, John Sheil, Esq., one of his majesty’s justices of the peace for said county of Londonderry, and voluntarily made oath on the holy evangelists, and saith, That he is 78 years of age and upwards, and that he was intimately acquainted with old James Crawfurd and his second son Hugh Crawfurd; and that he often heard old James Crawfurd say, that he was born and bred in Scotland, and that he came from that country to Ireland to reside, and that his relations or family possessed valuable estates in Scotland. And deponent saith, that he remembers the time when old James Crawfurd died, and was at his wake and funeral, which was about the month of February in the year of our Lord 1760. And deponent farther saith, that he understood the estates were named Kilbirnie, and some others in that country, which he, deponent does not recollect, except those in the shire of Ayr, to the best of deponent’s knowledge, recollection, hearsay and belief.
Sworn before me at Castle-Dawson, in the county of Londonderry, this 30th day of January 1810, being first truly read and duly interrogated.

I am looking for information on both ends of James Johnston: 1) going back further in time to link him to Scotland, and 2) going forward to find and contact a living male Johnston Irish descendant of James Johnston who will be willing to do a Y-DNA test at our expense.
I have managed a JOHNSTON Y-DNA project for over 10 years now and have established our origins in Scotland genetically, but have failed to make a "paper" connection. We have a private group on Yahoo for members only who have proved their connection via a "paper trail" or a Y-DNA test. Here is the link to our group:
https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/JohnJohnstoun/info
If you are a Johnston we invite you to do a Y-DNA test to see if we are connected. We prefer to use FTDNA as our testing company because of its superior resources that are available to us. Should you already have done a Y-DNA test with another company then you should contact FTDNA to see about having a "make up" test done as different companies used different markers - we cannot compare apples to oranges, so to speak. We also have our JOHNSTON Family Newsletter, a JOHNSTON Y-DNA Spreadsheet, and a JOHNSTON Phylogenetic Tree. Of all the Johnstons, Johnstones, and Johnsons tested we make up only about 4% of the total tested by FTDNA. The rest adopted the name somehow or other if they originated in Scotland. We are of Danish Viking origins with an alleged connection to William the Conqueror and Margaret, wife of King David I of Scotland.
Thank you for taking the time to read this, and if you've made it this far thank you very much, again. I hope that you can help us :-)
Good hunting,

Hi Cliff
Apologies for the long delay in getting back to you.
Have you had a look here to see if anyone else is researching the family name? You just have to go to the main message board page and add the family name and click search.
Best wishes
