I will be travelling to Ireland at the end of this month, and will be spending 6 weeks in this beautiful country.  My great great Grandfather, Samuel McNeilly was married on June 4, 1860 in the Parish Church, in the parish of Carnmoney. His wife was Elizabeth Hewitt.   I also know that my great  Grandfather William John McNeilly  (son of Samuel) was married in the Woodburn Presbyterian Church on May 14, 1894 to Eliza Jane Smyth. 

I obtained a Death Certificate for Samuel McNeilly that indicated that he died in the District of Doagh, Antrim on November 12, 1900.  I am unsure if this is the death certificate for my great great grandfather as I have been unable to locate a Birth Certificate.  As his marriage certificate indicates he was 21 years of age when he married in 1860, I put his birth in 1839.  If you're  able to help locate a birth certificate it would assist in identifying his parents names and confirming that the death certificate I have is actually for my great great grandfather.

    This baptism record is the right year & names John & Joseph are similar so perhaps it was a transcription error - all to common - that explains the difference?

  • Thank you for the information.  I notice that you have the last name of Neilly and not McNeilly.  Is it that the records show it as Neilly and not McNeilly?

  • Yes the search was done with surname variants selected; the record I sent was as it was written.

    There was a lot of variation in the accuracy of records for many reasons including transcription errors, illiteracy, personal whim etc

  • Mc & O' prefixes in Irish names are detachable and are often omitted in official records.
