My name is Anthony Patrick Power. I am a second generation Australian and reside in Perth, Western Australia. My grandfather was William Power and he was born in Wexford on the 16th of October 1858 9date is uncertain but in that time frame) He was a seafaring man and jumped ship at Fremantle in Western Australia sometime in the eighteen eighties. Because of this there are no official records of his entry into Australia. He did however, put roots down in Fremantle, married in 1891 and had several children, one being my father, Vincent Paul Power. On his marriage certificate he gave his father as John Power Stone Mason.

He left Fremantle on a ship in 1914 when my father was only ten years old, never to be heard of again. He left many grandchildren and great grandchildren and we are all curious to know what happened to him. His father is shown on his marriage certificate as John Power, Stonemason. Assuming that there were large families back them we are certain that he would have had many siblings.

Would appreciate if you in some way publish this letter in the hope that there is a Power family connection, even from the scant information provided. Perhaps I could even unearth some Power family cousins.

My email address is Anthony.power7@bigpond.com.

Thank you

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched for possible baptismal records for William with a father named John. The only record I could locate was in 1862 see below. The church was the Wexfors town parish. Those records are not on Roots Ireland so your only alternative to search for siblings is to go thru the parish register http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0610

I know there are a good number of Power messages on our message board. You can go to the Search bar on the main page and enter Power.

You may also want to consider autosomal DNA testing.

Thank you for your reply. I have also found a William Power Baptized April 22nd 1861. Parents also John power and Margaret Hayes. Wondering if this Willaim Power died as a baby?

  • Hi Roger

I am on the trail of William power again. What do you think of my comments that the April 22nd baptism of William Power to parents John Power and Margaret Hayes died as a baby as they had another William Power as you have pointed out born November 23rd 1862. What do you think?

I agree that the 1861 William likely died and the next boy was also named William.
