I am interested in finding information re my grandaunt's family. My grandaunt, KITTY (Catherine) GOUGH married JAMES HILL of Belfast. KITTY was born in Waterford in 1884 to MICHAEL GOUGH & MARY PHELAN/WHELAN.

KITTY'S sister, ELLEN GOUGH, later MURPHY, was my grandmother.

KITTY GOUGH & JAMES HILL married possibly around 1905 and lived in Belfast. I am not sure if they lived for a time in England, as I haven't discovered the family in the 1911 irish census. I find no marriage record on rootsireland.ie. I remember my grandmother talking of Kitty's daughter... named DAISY ?...I think there was a second daughter and they visited the family in Waterford. James Hill may have at one stage been a Publican. Kitty was still alive in the 1970s, as my grandmother corresponded with her up until then.

I have a photo of Kitty as a beautiful young woman..,and a second photo showing Kitty, her husband James Hill and my grandmother Ellen Gough.

Thank you for any information.

  • Thank you for all that information! I wonder could she be my grandaunt? I have a few things to consider. This person's father was named MICHAEL GOUGH, which fits. However, the bride's name on the record is given as ELIZABETH;whereas my grandaunt was named KITTY (Catherine). I thought it could have been a mistake by the clerk but I've found this Elizabeth & James Hill in the 1911 census and her name is definately Elizabeth. Was my grandaunt possibly known as Elizabeth in Belfast? Interestingly, the census form says she was born in Waterford, which then again fits my aunt. I don't see a single family name in her children, which I would have expected.

But, once again, thank you very much. Maybe I can work on the names you've provided and can get further in my research!

  • Thank you Elwyn,

yes, that's my GOUGH family on the 1901 census, in Waterford...NELLIE was my grandmother. Didn't consider the fact that KITTY'S name could have been ELIZABETH CATHERINE. I must order her civil birth record, as I have seen before that  a child was given only one christian name on one record but two christian names on the second record.

    Kind Regards

  • I would also look at the full civil marriage certificate for the 1910 marriage. What Col has found is an extract and does not contain every piece of information that is contained on the original cert eg bride’s father’s name. You already know that the bride’s father was named Michael Gough (which fits with the information you have given) but if his occupation is gardener (or similar) that ought to clinch it. You can view the original certificate on-line on the GRONI website, using the “search registrations” option:

    https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk

You will need to open an account and buy some credits. It costs £2.50 (sterling) to a view a certificate. You can also view the couples childrens birth certs on the same site.

  • Hi Davern, I am a new researcher on this site.  Your query does not cover my area but I had to join as I feel you may be researching my husband's family!!!!!!!!!  My husband's father (still living)  is from Ballinakill, in Waterford.  His father was Patrick and his grandfather was John.  there are two things that made me feel it is the same family.............the Mary Bridget name and also the visitor who was named Phelan.  NOW my husband's uncle Billy (deceased) did the family tree......and while doing so he went in search of a Phelan family.  When he got to the house a Mrs Whelan greeted him and when he said he was looking for a Phelan family alleged to live here.............she replied "oh we used to be Phelan but the postman asked us to change to Whelan as there were too many Phelans on his route"  we were shocked and astounded at this story.  I will see if I can get hold of the family tree he did and get details from it.  I know the name Hutcheson came up a few times. I think you could start looking at all the records in the Parish of Ballinakill. I think that your great grandfather Michael who lived in Barrack Street, Waterford may have been a brother to John in Ballinakill. Cannot say for sure so but I will definitely look into it..............quite excited about it all but as some members of this family are still alive I may have to contact you privately to preserve their privacy.  I will get back to you (I have just requested a copy of the family tree from someone on facebook) when I get a reply.  I will also contact another relative in Australia and see if he can shed any further light on your Gough ancestors..................thanks for your enquiry.................Graiguegirl

  • Well graiguegirl....I'd be delighted to hear from you;great if there's a family connection!  I have gathered lots of stuff over the last 4 years but I can't connect the families without someone at the other end doing some research..so would be lovely to compare notes.

My gr grandfather MICHAEL GOUGH was born in Dunhill in 1857 d. 1944. He is buried in Butlerstown, Co.Waterford.

    His parents were EDMUND GOUGH/CATH.THOMPSON. Edmund b.1830 d. 1900.

MICHAEL'S  siblings were, CATHERINE, ELLEN and THOMAS. (Thomas' gr granddaughter contacted me 2 years ago). Two weeks ago a lady informed me that she thinks I should include a PATRICK b. 1862 as a sibling. I hadn't discovered him as the mother's maiden name on his bap.record is not given as THOMPSON but GOUGH. I think this PATRICK could possibly be a further sibling;for instance, there's a Patt Gough as a Witness on MICHAEL's marriage record in 1883.

As you probably know, the Gough families abound with Michaels, Thomas', Patricks + Johns!!! It would be great if you can shed some light on any of this...no matter how little. I find the name THOMAS GOUGH quite often on records of my gr and gr gr grandfather. As I haven't located siblings of my gr gr grandfather EDMUND, I wonder if he had a brother with this name? I've seen a marriage record; THOMAS GOUGH to a MARY HUTCHESON 1858. Interestingly, you mentioned the surname Hutcheson.

Looking forward to hearing from you. I will gladly then give you my e-mail address. Thanks for contacting me.

  • Update re KITTY HILL nee GOUGH + Thanks to Elwyn!

Elwyn, I've been meaning to get back to you to say 'Thank you' for your assistance. The information you provided re my gr Aunt Kitty + her children is correct. I still don't know why she used the name Elizabeth, along with the Catherine. With the  information you gave me I was also able to find the marriage partners of those children who survived to adulthood. Once again, great work!

    Kind Regards
