My ancestor, Robert Brown, was born 1 JAN 1807 in Druminorewrst, Parish of Kilmachshalgan, Co. Sligo, Ireland. He emigrated March 23, 1834 out of Liverpool, accompanied by his wife Jane and daughter Hannah, arriving in New York May 28, 1834.

Robert's father, Thomas, mother Alice, and a brother evidently stayed behind in Ireland. We found property records owned by Thomas, Robert and brother Patrick when we were at the National Archives in Dublin ten years ago.

My husband and I live in the United States, and are planning to visit Sligo this July or August, 2016. Does anyone have any information about this family? Are there any Brown's still in the area, or does anyone know where they moved on to?

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Here is a link to the 1858 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Kilmacshalgan civil parish and five Brownes are listed. http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/sligo/kilmacshalgan.htm   The place name you mention in 1807 is not an offical townland in Kilmacshalgan. The 1901 and 1911 census records for the parish still show Brown families in the parish. We do not have any data bases after 1911. I did check the online Irish phone book and there were no browns listed in the area. However, the online directory is only a partial list of phone users.

  • Thank you! I think Drummorwrst was Drummore-West. It was a handwritten document from a letter in 1868 by Robert Brown a year before he died. Might the townland name be either Killala or Templeboy?

Yes, I found those land listings when I was at the archives in Dublin ten years ago. Three of the landholders are my ancestors. I'm hoping to be able to visit the plots of land.

Do you have any advice about how to search for anything after 1911 to see if I can track any of the Browne family's movements through the century?

  • Hello

I am from the area near Dromore West. The name of the village and tow land is Dromore West. There are Brown families in the area, 2 that I am aware of and one family has a son named Robert so possibly related to you as the name has probably carried down through the generations. I would be happy to help if you get back to me and we could correspond directly by email. Do you have any other info or how do you know these Brownes in Griffiths Valuation are tryout ancestors?
