I'm descended from Eliza BOYLE born c.1828 a daughter of John BOYLE (a merchant/grocer, in Main Street, Dungloe) and Jane (nee GADSBY), at Dungloe in County Donegal, Ireland. The town of Dungloe is in the parish of Templecrone.
Eliza married John McELGUNN on 25 Apr 1845 at Dungloe, Co. Donegal. [According to information shown on children's birth certificates here in the State of Victoria, Australia] they had 5 children born there, then spent a few years in London where John was a policeman. He resigned from the London Metropolitan Police on 12 July 1857. The family had emigrated to Melbourne, Victoria, Australia by May 1858 when John was appointed to the Victoria Police Force.
BOYLE family info:
John BOYLE was born in c.1800. His occupation was Merchant (Grocer) at Dungloe. Residence in Main Street. In August 1847 he was the Relief Officer for Rutland and Mullaghderg and before that he was the Warden for famine relief at Dungloe. He died on 16 February 1866 in Dungloe.
John BOYLE's wife was Jane GADSBY. She was born c.1802 and died on 18 November 1882 in Dungloe. Residence in Main Street, Dungloe.
John BOYLE and Jane GADSBY had at least 2 children.
- Eliza BOYLE was born in c.1828 in Dungloe she married John MCELGUNN on 25 April 1845 in Dungloe. Eliza McElgunn died on 23 March 1869 in Richmond and was buried on 24 March 1869 in Melbourne General Cemetery.
- Joseph BOYLE Birth date unknown. Occupation in 1867 was Farmer. Residence Bet. 1867–1877 in Main Street, Dungloe. He married on 6 February 1867 at St Peter's in Dungloe to Hannah SWEENEY (dau of Hugh SWEENEY and Grace BOYLE). Joseph and Hannah BOYLE had at least 3 children: John Boyle b. & d. 23 March 1868; Grace Boyle b. 21 April 1869; and John Boyle b.10 December 1870 at Dungloe. I do not know anything more about Joseph Boyle and his family. Did they emigrate? When and where did they die?

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
I looked at the civil death indexes records for the Glenties registration district. I presumed Joseph was born around 1830. There were no records from 1864-1901 for a Joseph Boyle born around 1830. I did not see him in the 1901 census so likely the family emigrated.

Dear John I actually own the house in Dungloe that you were seeking info on. My grandfather purchased the BOYLE house in 1904. He bought it from G.Boyle who lived in Chicago who inherited it from her family. I thought her nickname was Gertie rather than Grace but in the tradition of the Rosses this would not be unusual. My family lived in the house continuously from 1904 to 2016. I now use it as a holiday residence. I have seen the original purchase documents and the price was £32. The mortgage on the property was paid off in 1932. Let me know if you need further info but i think your family emigrated to Chicago which was a Rosses destination. Sincerely Mary

Thank you very much for your message about my ancestors house in Main Street, Dungloe.
There have neen many suggestions that Joseph Boyle and his family emmigrated to America, but I have not as yet traced them, so you information that G. Boyle lived in Chicago is a good lead.
Joseph's sister, Eliza Boyle (my great great grandmother) emmigrated here to Australia in 1857 with her husband John McElgunn and thier children.

Happy to be of assistance! I only found this website yesterday and saw your note. As far as family lore would have it I don’t think that G. BOYLE ever married. This house was owned by her brother and when he died she was the next one in line to inherit. Now it had to be that the original property was left to the three original family members as a group rather than to one. You might want to look at Arranmore Island/ Burtonport church records or St Crona ‘s ( Dungloe) records for more info. BOYLE is such a prevalent name in the Rosses area as is O Donnell and Sharkey so I hope you have a nickname to go on. Chicago was the main destination for most of the people from Arranmore . It’s odd that your family ended up in Australia. Did you ever try to see immigration records from either Glasgow or Liverpool. Both were embarkation points. The other possibility is the Derry to Philadelphia to New Orleans route. The ship records for the Derry to Philadelphia routes are available on line and the ship records in either Melbourne or Hobart might help.
I was born in Limerick, spent three years in Dungloe then emigrated to the U.S. I spent my adult life in New York, now in Wilmington , Delaware. It’s thirty miles south of Philadelphia which unlike New York filled with people from Donegal. My daughter actually spent her summers going between Ireland and Australia. Long story but she used to stay at her father’s home in Rose Bay, a suburb of Sydney. She also went to University in New Orleans and law school in Philadelphia. It’s really a very small world but it seems that Donegal people like to follow their Viking heritage and ramble about the globe.
