Greetings from Nepean, Ontario, Canada

I am searching for a George Coughlin in Ireland. They seem few and far between in the various registers (in my era circa 1800 to mid to late 19th century) and only one turns up in Ancestry. Born about 1800, he turns up in a marriage records for St Mary's Kilkenny City in November 1826 (residing in Ullid) and a death Kilmacow on March 31st 1867 aged 66. Buried in the Catholic Churchyard April 2nd.

My George, my great great great grand-father turns up on my great great grandfather John Coughlin's marriage certificate in Westminster, London as "Father" and "a Bricklayer"; in October 1853. John is of full age, over 21 born 1830. John is also a Bricklayer.

Are there any records in and around Kilmacow that could tell me is this George was a Bricklayer?

Many thanks

John C Murray

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

His 1867 death record shows his occupation as labourer. See below. I also found a church death record and it shows that George's father was Edward. Not sure you can read this record from Find My Past. Hit the link and see if the image comes up.

Let me know if you have questions.

  • Hi Roger,

Many thanks, if it is my George he was probably inflated on his Son's marriage certificate. His Son (John) called himself a Bricklayer on the marriage certificate, but in both 1861 and 1871 he is listed as a labourer in the census. I wonder if they had skills but did whatever they could to earn a living.

Could you answer me one/two silly question(s), there does not seem to be many George Coughlins in the Catholic or the Civil Registry on the Ancestry Site. This George Coughlin seems to be the only one in that era. Which is probably why I am investiagting him. Was George not a commonly used name? Was it to close to UK Royalty for the name to be used, or am I barking up the wrong tree here?

George was not a common given name particularly with RC families. George was more likely to be used by non-RC families and was more prevalent in Ulster and the counties on the eastern side of Ireland like Kilkenny.
