Hello Friends,
My father and I are working on tracing our ancestral heritage in Ireland in preparation for our trip there this July. We have worked with an amazing local genealogist and traced our known ancestor to Margaret Kilgannon who was born in Nov 1850. She was baptized on Nov 23 1850 at the Ahascragh & Killisolan parish. Her parents were Margaret Geraghty and William Kilgannon. It it thought that they both passed away in Mountbellew. Margaret in 1879 at age 60 and William in 1873 also at age 60.
I have been attempting to find Margaret Geraghty's baptism in the parish records. I came across Margarita Gereghty baptized Nov 4th 1818 in Killian under the Elphin Diocese. I am wondering if anyone know if this Margarita Gereghty could be the same Margaret Geraghty that married William Killgannon on Feb 13, 1844 at the Ahascragh & Killisolan parish.
Any information is greatly appreciated!
Thank you,
Rayna Clancy

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
I don't think you will be able to prove/disprove the record in Killian is the same Margaret who married William Kilgannon in 1844. I looked at the 1824 Tithe listings for Ahascragh civil parish and there was a Michael Geraghty in Kilglass townland, Possibly this is the father of Margaret.

According to this site, http://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=GA&… the Ahascragh Catholic church was built around 1800 but records do not start until 1840 http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0535
So the question would be if they lived in Ahascragh, why would Margaret be baptized in Killian/Ballygar RC parish which is just to the north of Ahascragh/Killosolan RC parish. One possible explanation is that the Geraghtys moved a little bit south sometime before 1824 but we can't prove that this move occurred.
Let me know if you have any questions.
