Jane - I do not have too much info for you and you may already be in Beara and have found out things for yourself.  I am here until 29th June so if you wish to contact me before then, please do so.  As far as I can see the Mary (b.1847) you are looking for must have been descended from Captain Mark O'Sullivan but I have very little information on him at the moment.  It would seem as if a sister to Mary married a Jer McCarthy and, as far as I know, that family are still in Ardacluggan to this day, with the present occupant being either Dannie McCarthy or one of his children.  See text below:-

Captain Mark O’Sullivan

Capt. Mark owned a big part of western Ardacluggan up to the 1850’s. He had a number of daughters, one of whom settled down in the place and married Jer McCarthy who came “cliamhaim isteach” from Tulloha, near Bonane, Kenmare. The McCarthy’s owned Ardtully Castle near Kilgarvan in former years and moved to Tulloha in the 1700’s. They were descendants of the McCarthys who defeated the Munster Normans at the Battle of Callan near Kilgarvan in 1261. One brother of Jer’s, Randal, was greatgrandfather of John R. McCarthy, Furniture, Hardware, Radio and Television Dealer, Kenmare, and another brother was Most. Rev. Dr. Daniel McCarthy, Bishop of Kerry from Aug. 25th 1878 until he died in 1881. The Bishop was previously Professor of Scripture and Vice-President of Maynooth College. He is buried in Killarney Cathedral.

Hi Roger ~ Thank you so much for the links!! Before I had posted on here, I was able to find the marriage certificate and birth certificates on Irishgenealogy.ie for a few of our relatives, based on their birth dates and locations, which was very helpful! 

To the Person who posted on June 6 ~ I am so sorry, but I am not able to figure out who posted the most recent reply dated June 6, 2016... but thank you sooooo much for this information!! I really appreciate any information you can give me! My mother (Maureen Sullivan), her cousin, and I are going to be arriving in Kenmare on June 13, and then we will arrive in Lauragh on June 15-20, staying in an apt. behind Helen's Bar. We are then coming to Eyeries (Coulagh Bay House) from June 20-24, where we will meet with the incredible Riobard O'Dwyer! We are then going to stay with a cousin from Cuhig who now lives in Cork and then we will go stay at Glenmore Lake, Lauragh. Thus, any more information you can give us would be greatly appreciated as we are spending all of our time on the Beara Peninsula to do family research. As Americans, it is so sad to me that we know so little about our Irish roots, and I can't wait to share the news with our extended family so they can come to Beara too. I do have a photo of Mary Sullivan, born June 5, 1847 in Ardacluggin, and I think it was taken near her death. Her husband John S. Sullivan from Clogherane was written about in the book "History of North Idaho" and there is a photo of him in there (see attached... the second photo of the man with the long white beard is not him), and I have several other photos of him. John S. seemed to have been an incredibly industrious, and as you can see from the attached article, he did very well in America, especially given how hard life was for the first pioneers. We know he applied for a passport twice to go back to Ireland to see his family, but we don't know if he was able to return. It is apparent that he had a great love for his country. Mary Sullivan Sullivan and John S. Sullivan's great grandson's name is Mark Sullivan, and Mark was born in Idaho, and now lives in the State of Washington. I will ask him if he knows the origination of his name, but it may all be connected. 

Can you let me know how I might reach Danny McCarthy?  I would love to know more. Are there any other Sullivans or McCarthys in Ardacluggan who we might be able to connect with? Is there a research library with genealogy information near there?  So many questions... we can't wait to learn more!!  Thank you again for your help!!
