Hi looking for any information on the Gault family, lived around Taylorstown Antrim. I have a Robert Gault born 1828, he married a Eliza Jane Cunningham in 1854, travelled to W.Australia in 1862. Roberts father was a William Gault.

The other Gault  I am looking for info on is Henry Gault, was arrested in 1851, sent to Belfast goal, then ono Dublin Newgate Goal. In 1853 he was transported to West Australia aboard Pheobe Dunbar. He was born around 1833.

Many thanks Dawn

  • I don’t see any Gault families in Taylorstown in Griffiths Valuation for 1862.

He had plot 5 which was a small farm (three quarters of an acre). What was William’s occupation, as per the marriage certificate?

I see this family in 1901:

They were Presbyterian. Were your family Presbyterian? Grange Presbyterian church is probably the nearest to where they lived. Their baptism and marriage records start in 1824. It might be worth checking them to see if your family attended that church. There’s a copy in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast. I don’t think they are available on-line anywhere though.

The gravestone inscriptions for Grange are on-line. I don’t see any Gault graves, but that’s not too unusual. Many people were buried without a gravestone.

Probate abstracts for the Gillistown Gaults:

Gault Adeline of Gillistown Ahoghill county Antrim died 29 April 1944 Administration Belfast 20 October to Robert Gault farmer the husband. Effects £663 10s. 4d.

Gault Robert of Gillistown Ahoghill county Antrim farmer died 8 December 1947 Probate Belfast 10 February to Robert Gault farmer Annie Stewart married woman and John McCullough farmer. Effects £1183 18s. 4d.

  • My name was Adeline Gault before I got married. My grandfather was Robert Gault, my father was Robert Gault and both lived in Gillistown and I now live in Somerset. My mother, May Gault resides in a nursing home now.

It would be great to hear from others who might have knowledge about my family and if I can contribute to the family history I would be happy to.

  • Hi Dawn,

I am in Sydney, Australi and have been investigating my own family tree. We have Gault's from Belfast on my father's side of the family. My father, Jack Ames, was born in Kansas City Missouri in 1931 and is a direct descendant of James Gault.

I found a Robert Gault who looks like James Gault's father. Here is the record: https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/L71D-SS6/details?spouse=L71D-S…

This Robert was born in 1817 and it looks like the whole family emigrated to the USA and settled in Boonville, Missouri around the 1850's or so.

If it's not the Robert you are looking for, perhaps they are related? I am very interested to know more about the Henry Gault who was transported! Perhaps I do have convict ancestry after all?

  • I found this Henry Gault too, born 1833 but died in the USA?

  • Hi Rebecca...SO EXCITED TO SEE YOUR POST! I too am a direct descendant of James Gault from Boonville, MO. I believe you are connected to Nettye Gault Ames. My great-grandmother was her sister Katie Gault Cooke. I have been searching for both Ames or Brown relatives for a long time. Little did I know that it would lead to Australia. Would love to hear your story. I have many pictures to share. Hope to hear from you soon. Best regards, Sandy
