My g.g.grandfather Edward Crennan married Julia/Judith Jackson c 1834 and had at least 3 children,Mary,Michael & John.According to alot of other people Julia married a John Butler & finished up here in Australia.Subsequently I am in a dilema as to whether there were 2 Julia Jacksons! I also have her parents as being Thomas Jackson & Mary Mulally, the same as the other Julia! There is accoridng to Irish records a death record of Thomas dying on the 24/11/1865 in Aughamucky and the informant being an  Edward Crennan which indicates to me that  the Butler connection is incorrect!

Also, I cannot find any records of death of either Julia Crennan(Jackson) nor that of Mary Jackson(Mulally).

There also seems to be no record of any births recorded for the Edward Crennan and Julia Jackson marriage between their (alleged) marriage in 1834 until at leasr 1840.

    Welcome to ireland Reaching Out!

The couple were actually married in the Muckalee RC parish in 1834. See transcription below. I located three baptismal records Michael 1842 Elizabeth 1845 John 1847 The family lived in Aghamucky townland in Castlecomer civil parish.

Not sure if Elizabeth was your Mary. Also, if they married in 1834, why was the first child born in 1842? (You had the same question).

I found the 1865 death record for Thomas Jackson where Edward Crennan was the informant and Thomas was 96.

  • thanks Roger. I concur with all of the above...."but" ther appears to be some suggestion that "my" Judith was married to a John Butler! if this was the case that would suggest I am up the wrong tree completely(excuse the pun)! Unless of course he dies and she remarried but that seems extreme as all of the Australian records and family hearsay do not make mention of. Another intriguing thing is I cannot find a death record (Irish) for a Judith Crennan other than the one which shows her as a widow but the Edward Crennan death record has him as a widower!! Cheers Larry

  • Hi Larry.  A mystery!  I've seen a lot of mentions of Julia Jackson and John Butler in Australia through Ancestry.com.  I know that my Julia and John didn't go to Australia.  They would not have been that invisible.  I tracked down one of these mysterious Julia and Johns on ancestry and found a 'source' document.  I googled the town mentioned and it was in England......  I think a lot of people have just used this as a fact without researching it properly.  I think my John Butler may have died and remarried!?  'My' Julia  was baptised 29 Septembe 1804.

  • I have also seen alot of mentions between Butler & Jackson & I reckon most of the peopl ejust follow like sheep and the myth self perpetuates! I' also thought perhaps there may have been a second marriage but if you look at all the births, etc of both Butler/Jackson & Crennan/Jackson marriages, some of them cross over. The biggest indication to me that "my" Julia wasn't married twice was the facts that on her childrens' wedding certificates, she (being the mother)is referred to in all instances as Jackson. If she had been married beforehand to John Butler she would no doubt be refrred to as Butler.A relation of mine has written a book on all the families which came to Australia and at no stage is ever mentioned (even with rumor) about Julia being previously married.A record of a Judith Crennan dying on the 1/3/1883 aged 94 at Crutt could be her bu that doesn't add up to her birth year (which one would think be close to her baptisamal record of 1804).Besides when her husband Edward crennan died in 5/2/1877 at Ahamucky he is listed as being a widower! Unfortunately nothing seems to stack up except for the facts that a Julia Jackson did marry an Edward Crennan which is substanciated by my Australian records and the very strong "hearsay" records of all our families that the Jackson,Crennan and Collier families were all related in some way.I therefore believe that the connection here is Julia's sister Margaret Jackson marrying Lawrence Collier. Margaret's parents are also listed as Thomas Jackson and Mary Mulally. Personally I think the Julia Jackson & John Butler connection is a red herring and therefore attache dto the wrong tree!? cheers Larry
