I have been trying to locate any information about James Battersby's parents, Thomas Battersby and Mary Caldwell but this has proved to be very difficult. Thomas and Mary are listed as James's parents on James's death certificate. He died in Scotland in Barrhead in 1860 at the age of 70. James and Jane had 11 children and it appears that they moved from Carnmoney between 1816 and 1821 as their son Andrew was born in Campsie, Stirlingshire in 1821.
I have not been able to find any information about the parents at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

They were Free Church of Scotland or Presbyterian. Some researchers believe that the Mary Caldwell in question was born in 1737 however, I have worked out tht this could not be James's mother as she would have been 53 years old when he was born. So I have ruled her out as his mother. Appreciate any help. thanks Sue

Your best bets may be to search church records for the family. Carnmoney Presbyterian church records go back to 1708 (with some gaps). You could search those for the family. There’s a copy in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast. Here’s a summary of what they hold for that church:
Baptisms, 1708-60, 1767-1807 and 1819-1968; marriages, 1708-58, 1767-89 and 1819-41; notebook giving marriages, births and deaths of various families, with an index, 1708-1917; session minutes which often include minutes of session and committee, 1686-1748, 1767-1821 and 1847-1933; names of those who transferred from other congregations, 1708-25 and 1859-60; poor lists, 1716-84 and 1878-80; accounts, 1895-98; registers of seat holders and pew rents, 1908-16, which contain plans of the meeting house, 1862-3, deaths of ministers, elders and members of committee, 1861-1916, extracts from wills recording bequests to the church, 1714-1909, lists of ministers and elders and when ordained, 1657-1908, and a list of 1st World War volunteers from the congregation, 1918; treasures account books, 1913-25; congregational account book, 1917-33.
Those records are not on-line, and so a personal visit would be required to view them.
There were secession Presbyterian congregations in Ireland (ie the equivalent of the Free Church of Scotland) but I don’t see any for Carnmoney, or at least none that has any surviving records. So probably the mainstream Presbyterian church is your best bet. They aligned very closely with the Church of Scotland.

Hello Sue. I'm descended from James and Jane through my paternal grandfather. Did you have any success with your search? It has been five years. I'm originally from Glasgow. I've been researching my Battersby ancestors and very interested in going back before 1700 if possible. If there are details you still need please let me know.
