Hi, I have been trying for many years without any luck for find my maternal grandfather, James Joseph O'Brien b.17.3.1888. He had a twin sister, Kathleen Josephine, parents William O'Brien (farmer) and Mary O'Neill.  He died at an early age in Sydney Australia in 1926 aged 38. On his marriage certificate it states he was from Dublin.  I have exhausted all avenues with this and have put this on the Dublin message board and the genealogists could not find anything. I also wrote to BDM in Roscommon and they had no record either. Today I came across in Family Search James and a Kathleen Josephine O'Brien both births listed in Limerick Vol,5 page 356 and page 375. GS film #101062, Image #00069.  I was wondering whether you could search a little deeper for me to see if these children have the same parents.  James came to Australia via Rio de Janiero in 1914. On his marriage certificate it states he was a mechanic. I was wondering whether he was in the Navy or as crew and worked his way across to Brazil and to Australia working on a ship.   I have not had any luck finding out anything even whilst I was financial with Ancestry.com.  I hope you will be able to find something for me.  Thanking you in advance.  Kathleen Reynolds

No luck with a pair of William & Catherine I'm afraid; I tried other searches without the mother's surname but still couldn't get a pair.

I assume the Fam Search record didn't give a Limerick parish that could be searched on the nli R C registers?

  • Hi Col, thanks for looking. I thought I had posted the date of birth James Joseph & Kathleen Josephine (twins) born 17th March 1888. (St Patrick's day LOL). It's William and Mary (parents)  not Catherine.  Unfortunately it only states Limmerick no parish.   I really dont know if they were born in Limmerick, it is only because I saw these two names listed in same register that I thought maybe its them, hoping.  Why can't I find them.   You would think it would be easy being twins and all. I don't suppose there would be a twin register around that time.  Cheers Kathleen

  • Hi Kathleen

I think Roger asked about the birth years.

The above are children of William & Mary in any county and any year; what I meant is there are no siblings James & Kathleen that I can see.

Irish genealogy is a frustrating pursuit!!

  • You can do YDNA testing to get better connected, I have learned so much through the people I've met in this project:

  • Hi Katrey42. you say you found James and Kathleen on Family search.  Was this a record taken from The General Registry Office, or from a Church Register.,    If from the former was there an address.  If from the latter which parish..

  • Hello Christine, It was from Ireland's Civil Register indexes.  Are you able to view the image?  His wife (my grandmother) and children (all passed) said he was from Dublin.  I am thinking his family may have moved there after he was born.   When I was searching I just put the name Kathleen O'Brien in and Kathleen Josephine O'Brien came up.  I have her as Kathleen Josephine and then I checked James and a James came up on same index but different page.  It is a wild shot I know but I am looking at everything now.  My cousin is visiting Ireland this month with her partner whose niece is Enya!   It is her grandfather too and it would be nice if she knew exactly where he came from so she could visit there.    Many thanks for your help.   Kathleen

  • Christine, I just noticed in my first post that I said James' father, William was a farmer.  This is incorrect.   He was an engine driver. This was on his marriage certificate.  Kathleen

  • Hi Kathleen, From your post I gather Enyas grandfather is also related to the person you are researching, or have I got it wrong.,

If Enya is descended from the person you are researching. go backwards in Enya's family tree using material from The General registry office which gives  a lot of ingormation re parents and addresses.

    Regards.

  • Hi Christine, I am sorry to confuse you but Enya is not related only by marriage. I am still working on O'Brien/O'Neill without any luck  Kathleen Reynolds

  • I have O’Neills from St Michaels and earlier St Johns parish in Limerick. O’Brien seems to be a very common name in the area. Have a trawl through the obituaries on this site. I have found it excellent to figure out family relationships between my Limerick ancestors. Hopefully it can help. http://www.limerickcity.ie/Library/LocalStudies/ObituariesdeathnoticesetcfromtheLimerickChronicle/
