I'm helping my brother-in-law trace his ancestry. His 3rd great-grandmother Catherine Buckley, along with her mother Ellen and older sister Nellie) emigrated to California, U.S. sometime between 1844-1864. Not sure if her father William died in Ireland before emigration or died in California. Her sister Ellen's California death certificate said that her mother's maiden name was Ellen Goulden and that she was born in Macroom (Cork). Using this information I was able to search NLI online parish registers, and found the baptismal record of Nellie Buckley (AKA Ellen) dated 29 June 1827 in Clondrohid parish, but not the record of her mother Ellen Goulden..
I have been unable to find the marriage record of her parents William Buckley to Ellen Goulden (married sometime before 1827). I have checked: Macroom, and surround parishes of Clondrohid, Aglish/Ovens, Annakissy/Monanimy, Blarney/Whitechurch, Donaghmore, Enniskeane, Inniscarra, Iveleary, Kilmichael, Kilmurry Kilnamartyra, Mallow, and Ovens. Some other surrounding parishes didn't seem to have marriage records available for the timeframe I'm looking at.
This is what I have been able to learn about the family so far from parish records:
William Buckley (?-?) married before 1827 to Ellen Goulden (born abt 1803 in Macroom, Cork - died March 1875 in Santa Cruz, California)
- Ellen Buckley (baptized 29 June 1827 in Clondrohid (Cork)
- Denis Buckley (baptized 10 August 1835 in Clondrohid (Cork)
- John Buckley (born & baptized 16June 1838 in Kenmare (Kerry)
- Mary Buckley (born & baptized 21 March 1841 in Kenmare (Kerry)
- Catherine Buckley (baptized 14 March 1844 in Kenmare (Kerry)
There is a big gap between the births of the first 2 children which I've been unable to fill. I'm not sure where they moved to or were living between 1827-1835. Sponsors for the children born in Clondrohid were: Margaret Kelleher and Darby Quill in 1827, and Francis Goggin and Mary Twomey in 1835.
I would welcome any suggestions or information for finding the marriage date and place of William Buckley and Ellen Goulden and the dates and places of birth for both of them. Also, additional children they might have had elsewhere between 1827-1835.
Many thanks and kind regards,
Leann Clark Carroll
