Hello,

I have been enjoying your site very much and have a couple questions.

I plan on visiting Ireland within the next year or so and hope to find some information on my family before the trip.

My great aunt put together our Donovan family history in the 1980's. The story begins:

"Four brothers and two sisters came from County Cork in the early 1840's. They were Cornelius, Jeremiah, Richard, Dennis, Mrs. Henry Mahoney, and Mrs. Jack Culligan."

Our family has been searching since then to find more about the siblings and to find something tying them to their homeland in Ireland.

We know about Richard Donovan. He is my 3rd great grandfather. He was born in 1815 and died in 1873 in Iowa, USA. He married Honora (O'Brien) Flanigan on 13 Aug 1848 in Iowa. Their children (in birth order) were Maurice, Cornelius, Jeremiah, Richard, Catherine, and Hanora>

Penciled in on the margins of the history is "Inchigeelagh." We have been searching for decades trying to find a parish, church, cemetery, any documents to show where their home was and wonder if Inchigeelagh is helpful in our search or not. Any insight would be so appreciated.

Also, I do hope to find the names of the Donovan sisters Mrs. Jack Culligan and Mrs Henry Mahoney.

Thank you so much for this site and for all the help you provide.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Inchigeelagh is a civl parish in West Cork and also an RC parish also known as Iveleary. Donovan is a very common name in Co. Cork. The records for Iveleary RC parish start in November 1816 which may be a little late for Richard Donovan if he was baptized in that parish in 1815. Here is a link to the Iveleary parish register http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0062  It would really be helpful if you knew the parents names of the Donovan children. It is possible that the father was Maurice since Richard named his oldest son Maurice. The parish register is likely cumbersome to navigate and records may be illegible or in Latin which will complicate your search. There is a free Irish government site which has the RC church records for parishes like Iveleary which are in the Diocese of Cork and Ross www.irishgenealogy.ie

Let me know if I can answer any questions.
