Hello, I will be visiting the Limavady area 4-8 October 2016. Is there a volunteer in the Tamlaght Finlagan area I could meet to discuss the area, please, and get some information on its history.

I am descended from Tristram Moore an Irish rebel convict sent to Australia in 1802.

I believe he was Protestant. It is unlikely any records exist to show his birth and family members, and whether he was married.

He was tried at Newtown Limavady in 1801 and then transported.

There were a lot of Moores in the Carrowreagh and Carrowclare areas in the 19th century including 2 Tristram Moores (father and son) I feel might have been related to mine.

I'd love to meet a local and find out about the area. I hope someone can help, please.

  • Hi Marilyn

As our volunteer will be on holiday in Canada at that time (I think he mentioned that in your earlier post) and as he is one of our only volunteers in that particular area your best bet might be to visit the local library at Limavaddy. There are a number of branch (smaller) libraries excluding Derry Central Library and Limivaddy can be contacted at:

    5 Connell StreetLimavadyLondonderryBT49 0EA
    t:028 7776 2540f:028 7744 2456
    e:limavady.library@librariesni.org.uk

The opening hours are as follows:

    Monday:10:00am - 5:00pm Tuesday:10:00am - 5:00pm Wednesday:2:00pm - 8:00pm Thursday:10:00am - 5:00pm Friday:10:00am - 5:00pm Saturday:10:00am - 4:00pm Sunday: Closed on Sunday

The librarians are very helpful and will be able to point out what references, if any, will be available but they may only be contextual given the early period.

    Best wishes

  • CLare, thankyou for this. Elwyn must cover both parishes. I'll follow your suggestions. I have been working out the Griffiths Valuation maps and have pinpointed locations of land tenanted and owned by the Moores in 1858.. My Tristram Moore was born about 1765-70 and is probably connected to these later Moores including 2 Tristram Moores.

Mine was tried as a rebel in 1801 in Newtown Limavady and transported to Australia. In 1796 there was a TM on the Flaxgrowers List in Tamlaght Finlagan - maybe mine or his father or uncle.

I'll try the Library and I think Coleraine Library may also have some documents.

    Thankyou, Marilyn.
