I am looking for any information re: my great-grandmother, Ellen Fitzgerald, who I believe was from Macroom.

I believe she was born Dec. 7, 1841 and married John Sullivan in Timoleague on June 18, 1859. Richard Fitzgerald and Andy Fitzgerald are listed as witnesses....possible siblings of Ellen?  I am told that Fitzgerald is not a common name in this area so I am hopeful that I may be able to get more information on this part of the family.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Macroom is a good distance from Timoleague. You mentioned that Ellen was born in December 1841. Do you have the baptismal record?

  • Hi Roger,

No, I do not have a baptismal record; I'm not sure if my cousin found one on-line.  Thank you for checking in.

  • HI,

The Andy Fitzgerald rings a bell here. However, I know that MY great grandfather Andrew (who may have gone by Andy) emigrated in 1850. His father was also Andrew. If he were still alive in 1859 that would be possible or it could be the child of another of his siblings as could Ellen. If you go to the Irish National Library records for Macroom parish there are some Fitzgerald baptisms. Very possible we are related.

Thank you for the tip....I checked out the National Library records and found two Ellen Fitzgeralds born in Macroom in 1841.  One was born on May 7 - parents: James Fitzgerald and Ellen Donahue and the other born Dec. 7 - parents Andy Fitzgerald and Ellen Delaney.  My cousin had also found the information on the latter.  Of course, with no census records it's hard to determine which is my relative. This Ellen Fitzgerald is my great-grandmother on my grandfather's side. His name was Michael Sullivan and his father was John Sullivan.  Michael emigrated to the US in 1891.  He married in Chicago -- Mary Sullivan, also from County Cork. I'm having more trouble finding information on her ... we thought she was from the Clonakilty area but have not had much luck finding records. Thank you for contacting me, if I find any further information on Ellen Fitzgerald, I will post them here.

  • The problem with family stories is that the geogrphy is often "off". I had heard for years that the other side of my Irish family was from Roscommon. Now maybe waaay back they were. But the generation that married into my Cooke side lived in a little townland in Sligo. The ONLY way to know for sure is to get an official death certificate for the immigrant relative (if one exists). The family members will have given parent names and maybe a place of origin. That's how I found my Fitzgerald relatives in Macroom and my Cooke relatives in Tobercurry. The other possibility is that if you found Richard Sullivan's citizenship papers (Ellen won't have any-she's grandfathered in on his) SOMETIMES there is just "Ireland" and sometimes there is a town listed.
