www.irishgenealogy.ie is a free Irish governement site which has church records for the Diocese of Cork and Ross which includes Cork city. I just searched for Robert Mahony baptismal records from 1820-1840 and there were none in Cork city. The closest was an 1829 record in Bandon.

Thank you very much for your kind reply.  Its very frustrating this geneology research.  Robert is actually buried in my home town here in Timaru and it states that he was born in the City of Cork and like you I have tried to locate his place of birth with no luck sadly.  The Bandon connection is interesting tho.  Ive tried to link to this parish with no luck.  Any suggestions.

He was shown as Mahony. The O suffix was usually suppressed in the 19th century.
