Hi

My grandfather, Richard Deluary was born in Doneraile in 1891 and moved to  Australia. I have been researching my family tree and have found the census records for him in 1901 and 1911. he lived at Buttevant Lane.  However the census records showed the surname spelt was Deluhery and Deluchary.  I have found information of his brother Denis, and visited Denis's grave when I was in Doneraile on holidays.  I am not finding much information, I think perhaps because of the variation in spelling of the name.  His father was Matthew Deluary and also lived in Doneraile, but I can find no details on Matthews family. I would appreciate any advice or knowledge.

regards

Margaret

Below is a link to the 1887 marriage between Mathew and Mary Linihane. The record shows Mathew's father was Richard. You may have to sign in to view the record.

FYI The Irish government last week released for free searching the civil records for viewing. www.irishgenealogy.ie has the records.

  • Hi Margaret

Found Richard in Doneraile , he was baptised Richard  Denis  Deluchery on the 2e December 1891 in Doneraile, father Mattew Deluchery mother Mary Linane, sponsor Minnie Linane.

In the 1901 census of Donerail their name is registered as Deluhery, they lived at 32 Buttevant Lane now called Convent Road, father Matthew was a labourer see the census record : http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Cork/Doneraile/Butteva…

Father Matthew was baptised as Mathew Delouhery on the 2e February 1868 in the townland of Ballycraheen in the parish pf  Donoughmore county Cork, father  Denis Delhouhery mother Catherine Hegarty

    Hope this helps

Thank you for your help.  I do have the 2 census records and the surname is spelt differently in each census.

From the advice of the Rodger above, I found Matthews marriage certificate on the link supplied and his fathers name was indicated as Richard.

So was his father really Denis?  This is the challenge I have been having in trying to identify who Matthews parents were

Hello. I have been able to find a lot more of my family history but still have some gaps. I do know that my grandfather (Richard) was born in Doneraile and his family lived in Buttevant Lane which was later changed to Convent Rd.  His surname was Deluary. However in a lot of the records I have found it spelt Deluchery, Deluchary, Deluhery, and many more variants.  My great grandfather was Matthew and he married Mary Linehane/Linehan.  His parents were Richard and Ellen.  Here I hit a few problems as I have not been able to find any dates that connect Richard and Ellens that I have found online to Matthew. On a separate branch my grandfathers brother was Denis and he remained in Doneraile and married Hannah Buckley and I believe their children remained in Doneraile. I had met one before she passed (Susan McInerney)  If anyone knows of any information or where I coudl find some information it would be most appreciated.  Thanks.  Margaret Deluary

  • Hi Margaret

I came across your research on your family tree. If it is of any help or interest, your grandfather was my grandmother's brother.

My grandmother's name was Angela Deluary and I think she was born 1901 or 1902. She married Harold William Ashbourn in London after WW1. They had two children Margaret Angela (born 24/12/23 in London - the records show Jan 1924) and Kathleen (Kay) Veronica (born 28/06/1926) - in Australia.

Kay never married and had no children.

Margaret married Milson Henry Tucker (in Bondi, Sydney) and had two children: Mary Elizabeth  (me - 53 years of age) and Karen Angela (57)

I have no children, and my sister, married Stephen Crawley has 1 child: Alex (17)

I grew up living in the same house as my grandmother and she often talked about her Irish brothers, Richard (Dickie) in Ireland, and Mattie and Dinny. My grandmother died in 1980 - she was not that old, in her late 70s. Everyone else lived into their 90s (except for Kay who died at 89). My grandmother missed Ireland terribly, and said she cried for the whole first year she was in Australia because she missed Ireland so much and all her family. My mother was very fond of Dinny and his wife Do (I don't know if that was her real first name). They lived in Queensland, which was were my grandparents also lived for many years before moving to Sydney. My grandmother never lost her lovely soft accent and always spoke so lovingly about county Cork and Doneraile.

If you would like to know more, just ask me. I have lots of photos if you're interested.

    Best regards, Mary

    Mary

So lovely to hear from you.  you have made my day!  I have done a lot of research of the family and have a lot of information and files.  Unfortunately I never got to meet Richard as he passed away before I was born.

Thanks for the information about Angela's family, I did have details of her children but have been unable to find any records of their marriage or their children so thanks for adding that info.

Angela, Matthew, Margaret and Richard all moved to Australia from Doneraile.  From what I have found so far, Matthew didnt marry and lived in Sydney,  Margaret married Dennis O'keefe and they lived in Brisbane.  My grandfather, Richard married Mary Morgan and lived in QLD as well. My Dad spoke fondly about Angela and Margaret and had met them both many years ago.

Dennis remained in Doneraile and married Hannah Buckely.  There was another sister Catherine but I have been unable to find any further information about her only birth and census details.

I can understand them missing Ireland, I have been to Doneraile on holidays a few time now and really loved the place and Ireland. I hope to get back again soon.

I have tried for years to find information on the Deluary family and it has been so difficult.  I have some photos of my grandfather Richard but have no photos of his siblings or parents. Do you have any information of your grandmothers parents - Matthew and Mary?

Did you grandmother spell her name as Deluary?  or a variation?

Any information you have that you would like to share would be amazing.

    Regards
