My grandfather (and, I assume, his younger brother) attended school in or near Strokestown. He was born in 1871 and his brother was born in 1872. Their names were John Ross Lynden and James Henry Lynden. Their parents abandoned them, leaving them with, I believe, cousins, and I am trying to learn what became of them -- who they lived with and where they went to school. They were COI, or at least their parents were. My grandfather mentioned that he was baptised by a "Parson Morton," but I haven't found a record for a Parson Morton either. (Morton was also a family name -- the boys' maternal grandmother was a Morton.) If I could find school records, I am hoping they would contain the boys' address and/or guardians' name. Both boys lit out for America in 1888.; 

Possibilities: James and Bessie Holton (Bessie was their mother's sister; James was an apothecary in Strokestown); James McManus (another uncle, but I haven't been able to figure out where he lived or anything about him); James and Susanna De Courcy (another aunt, and I don't know where the De Courcys lived either); and William Beatty. I have no idea who William Beatty is, but his name appears in family documents. He may have married another aunt, but if so, I haven't found out her name and she died prior to 1875. Another possibility is Samuel and Eliza Thompson, but I think they lived in County Longford and my grandfather always said he was from Strokestown.

Is there a way to find school records?? Thank you very much.

  • Church of Ireland Ecclesiastical Directory 1872 (Thom's), includes an entry for a Joseph Morton A.M., Incumbant of Bumlin (parish) Elphin Diocese, his post town is Strokestown.  Bumlin Church of Ireland parish included the town of Strokestown, also two adjacent civil parishes - Kiltrustan and Lissonuffy.

  • I have Armstrong cousins who have a Capt John Armstrong married to Margaret Morton c1825 on their family tree. They lived at Creagh Kenagh Co Longford.

    Not sure where Margaret came from but John Armstrongs brother Newcomen Armstrong would have Beatty cousins through his wife Jane Moore.

    Rev Joseph Morton was living at Newtown Glebe, Bumlin, Strokestown Co Roscommon in 1854 (Griffith Valuation). I dont know if Margaret Morton and Joseph Morton are related. More research needed

  • How interesting! I am struck by the coincidence (if coincidence it is) that John Armstrong had a brother Newcomen Armstrong. "My" Margaret Morton's brother, Lewis Hawkes Morton, married a Charlotte Newcomen of Clonahard/Cloonahard near Longford town. I believe she lived in the manor house and was granddaughter to a Viscount. They married in January of 1832. It's actually the only record I have found for Lewis Hawkes Morton, so for a long time I supposed it was his father, also Lewis Hawkes Morton, who married Charlotte ... but I think now it must have been a son. 

    I have a lot of Morton threads but have not yet succeeded in weaving them into a clear picture-! "My" Margaret Morton (g-g-gmother) lived approximatey 1815-1878.

    "Armstrong" shows up on my tree a couple of times as a first name (Armstrong Todd b. 1826, son Armstrong Todd, M.D., b. 1865).
