Edward Moran

The registry office marriage could suggest a mixed marriage..  there are a small number of Trowbridge (with variations) showing in the records on the IrishGenealogy website, a mix of RC and Church of Ireland.

There were a couple of large houses in Roebuck townland where a Gardener may have been employed (assuming Edward was living with his father at the time of marriage), the largest being Roebuck Castle, which I know from later records employed quite a number of staff including several gardeners. Some of the large old redwood trees along driveway between the gatehouse and the Castle are still there. A cottage used by the gardener is mentioned on the 1943 auction of the casltle and lands.

What are the other occupations on the cert, e.g. for Edward, and Elizabeth's father ?

Thanks so much for your prompt and interesting reply. Both their fathers were gardeners, but Eliza was born in Wiltshire, England, from where her family originated. It had not occurred to me before but I wonder if Thomas Trowbridge, Eliza's father was working in Ireland at the same place as Edward and that is how the couple became aquatinted. I had previously thought that Edward was working in England as a gardener and met Eliza through his occupation then brought her back to Dublin!  However I think Eliza left Wiltshire several years before her marriage so perhaps I am just muddying the waters!

My great grandparents Colin & Isabella Methven were married in the Rathdown district registry office in 1861.

This registry office was as far as I can see located in Rathdown Workhouse which gave me a shock - but neither of them were redients. I don't think they allowed workhouse residents to marry.

Colin was also a gardener at Roebuck castle. I am puzzled as to why they elected to get married in a registry office. Both of them were middle class, their fathers being Land Stewards. Was it a mixed marriage? Was the bride pregnant?
