I have traced my ggGrandfather Daniel Hennessy to Ballincaroona townland in Limerick nestled right up against Co Tipp. His parents' - William Hennessy and Mary Kirby - marriage in 1826 is recorded along with the Baptisms of his siblings. Daniel went first to Limerick City where he married and grew his family before emigrating to Chicago IL in the 1860s. His brother James joined him in Chicago where the two opened a meat market. I have also traced Daniel's and James' descendants here in the US but know nothing about his siblings - Timothy (1830), John (1833), William (1839), Dennis (1840), and Mary (1842). His youngest brother David (1844) I think died in Limerick City and is buried next to his father in Mt St Lawrence Cemetery.

I would love to be able to definitely link this Hennessy family with the other Hennessys in Ballincaroona or nearby and Daniel's siblings. Because of the small size and population of Ballincaroona in the first half of the 19th century, I have been keeping a database of other families within the townland from the NLI Catholic parishes records and can share.

One major question: where were the graveyards or cemeteries? I have only been able to find one Hennessy buried within the parish.

Thanks, Karen

  • Hi Karen,

Sounds as if  you’re done a lot research on the families in Ballincaroona (great idea to put them all in a database), but have you considered looking for graveyards in neighboring townlands?  As you know, sometimes you blink your eyes, and you’re in the next townland.

So if you haven’t already, you might want to check out the neighboring townlands to Ballincaroona:

    Ballinvreena to the east

    Drumcomoge to the east

    Grange to the east

    Kilrush to the west

    Knocklong to the west

    Knocklong East to the south

    Knocklong West to the west

I say this because that tactic worked for me.  I have Kirby ancestors from the same area of Co. Limerick - townland Rathjordan, Parish of Hospital and Herbertstown (haven’t linked them up to your townland Ballincaroona). We found who I believe may be my 4G grandparents in a graveyard in another townland Cahercorney to the west of Rathjordan. The headstones labeled these pencil Kirby ancestors of mine “of Rathjordan.”

Also, if you haven’t already, check out historicgraves.com.  Hope this helps!
