I would like to know anything/everything about this family and the National school where they worked.

  • Dear Carmel

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

As you probably know, Patrick and Hannah married in Pettigo, Co. Donegal on 7th August 1890. He was from Garrison and she from Beleek. Both were teachers. His father was John and hers Eugene, both farmers. Witnesses to the marriage were James Magee and Hannah Daly. Children to this couple included:

    Catherine 6th Jan 1892

    Hannah Maria 7th Jul 1893

    John Joseph 21st Sept 1894

Gertrude Frances 23 Nov 1895 (though her mother's first name is listed as Marion- her father Patrick is a Teacher).

    Eugene 28th June 1897

    Patrick Sidney 17th Dec 1898

    Thomas Louis 4 June 1900

    Timothy 11th Jan 1902

    Charles Jeremiah 26th July 1904

    Peter Paul 3rd July 1907

    Michael Augustine 4th April 1909

    Cyril 23 Aug 1911

There might be more children and you can search for any additional at www.irishgenealogy.ie for free. You can see the family HERE in 1901 and HERE in 1911. By 1911 the couple had been married for 20 years and had 12 children with 10 still living.

You could take out a 24 hour subscription to rootsireland and check through the gravestone records to see if anything jumps out - I couldn't see anything immediately relevant for a Treacy up to 1980 in Fermanagh. You could also use that subscription to see if you can locate a baptism for Patrick and Hannah. Do you know what religion they were?

The townland of Garrison is in the very west of the county in the civil parish of Devenish close to Beleek.

Apparently Garrison school was later known as Knockraven School. The cataloge of files of school records is available at PRONI HERE but I have inquired from an Ulster volunteer if a personal visit is needed to Belfast to view them - perhaps I am looking at the wrong part of their ecatelgoue (I will let you know).

There were 6 school buildings listed in Deenenish parish in 1826 but none refer to Garrison directly. They were mostly cabin type buildings with a roof of thatch.

Officially the National School system begin in Ireland in 1831 and the next report for that period in relation to the performance of schools is in 1834-35. I don't see Garrison school among the list for Co. Fermanagh so it might not have been one of the early established ones. The only school in the parish then was called Knocknashannon. You can search each report HERE and see if Patrick is listed in any of the later ones.In 1837 this was the same case as you can read HERE. As this is the case you could search reports from the time of Patrick's marriages or thereabouts.

    Hope this helps

    Best wishes

  • PS Unfortunately you do have to go to PRONI in person to view any of the school records
