Great-Grandfather Martin TIERNEY came to New Zealand.  Born in Moycullen 1854, christened 6 August of that year, parents

Martin TIERNEY & Mary HANLEY.  I am aware he had a brother MICHAEL 1863-1916, married to a Margaret KELLY and a

sister MARY born 1865 who became a nun.  MARY was present at her mothers Mary's death 29 February 1908 according

to the death certificate.   No other details known about his sister Mary.  There maybe other children I am not aware of.

It is possible our New Zealand Martin TIERNEY is the son of MARTIN TIERNEY 1817-1894 of Moycullen, featured in

the publication "The Killing of the Pig".  I am aware there are TIERNEY'S still living in Clooniff, Moycullen & hope for information

to fill in the missing pieces.

  • Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the long delay in getting back to you.

I take it you have already checked out Ancestry.com to see if there is any reference to Mary? Do you know what Order she entered or if she emigrated?

I hope someone with a connection to the family will be in touch. In the meantime, I wanted to invite you to add your ancestor's details to our XO Chronicles. You can learn more about it HERE and it might be another avenue to consider so that your ancestor's details can be seen by others.

    Best wishes

  • Thank you for your reply.  Yes Ancestry.com has been checked I am an active member and appear to be the only one

entering details on our Tierney family at this stage.   Unknown what order "Mary" entered, she did not emigrate as far

as I know, the death certificate on rishgeneaology.ie 29 Feb 1908 states Mary was present at the time of her mothers death.

I have recently made contact with the Moycullen Historical Society, received a very prompt helpful reply from a member

who on receipt of my query took off to the Moycullen cemetery and photographed Tierney graves for me and included

the photographs in her reply.   She has also put me in touch with a Tierney family member still living in the Tierney

house at Clooniff.  I have emailed this person and await their reply.

    Kind Regards

  • Jill Craig, Did you ever hear from the Tierney family in Clooniff?  I have a DNA match to a woman who told me that she has Tierney ancestors from Clooniff.

  • No I never heard back from anyone which was disappointing, in the meantime I have located the death and burial site of Martin's sister who was a nun.

    Thanks for making contact again.
