I have a family history (no cited sources) that says an early ancestor came to Ireland as a captain with Cromwell's forces and was granted land in Armagh. Among the land he was supposedly granted where the townlands of Marlacoo More and Marlacoo Beg and it was here he made his home.

He later (1680s ??) moved to Donaghadee where he died.

I am looking any confirmation of this claim and any other geneological info I can find.

Thanks

  • Bob,

Have you searched Prendergast’s “Cromwellian Settlement of Ireland” ? See:

  • Thanks for the quick reply.

I do have Prendergast's book, but my ancestor William Workman is not in the short list in it.
And while I had not discovered this link the list is only until 1846 and for Adventures.
My ancestor was an officer with Cromwell, who did not come over until 1849.

I am hoping some local historian might have information on the owners of the two townlands in question.

    Thanks
    Bob

  • Bob,

    I assume you mean 1646 & 1649 not the 1800s.

You could search the Registry of Deeds to see who held the land in the early years. The Registry of Deeds starts in 1708. The originals are in Dublin and there’s a duplicate set in PRONI. You can search by townland.

Looking at PRONI’s e-catalogue it looks as though the Atkinson family had some of the 2 townlands in the 1700s:

D2538/A/109 Marriage Settlement 1789 between William Atkinson, merchant, Moore Street, Dublin and Agnes Atkinson formerly Henderson, his wife, 1st part and John Rawden and Walter Young, Gentlemen, of Glaslough, Co. Monaghan, 2nd part; of Moyraverty, Aghory and Marlacoo, Co. Armagh.

LPC/319 is a lease dated 1700 involving a Thomas Black of Marlacoo Beg.

The undertakers who held O’Neilland barony in the Muster Rolls (c 1630) were Anthony Cope 3000 acres, John Dillon 1500 acres, Mr Waldrum 2000 acres Mr Stanhow 1500 acres, Francis Satcheurall 2000 aces, Richard Cope 2000 acres and Sir William Brownlow with 2500. I am not sure which covered Mullaghbrack parish. A bit more research required to work that one out.

I don’t see any lands in Mullaghbrack forfeit in the Down survey, following the 1641 rebellion. Looks as though Marlacoo remaine din the same hands.

  • You are right I am talking about 1649.
Family History says William Workman came with Cromwell as a captain. This I have not been able to verify. It says he held the two townlands of Marlacoo for some time but them went to Donaghadee.
He was forced to flee to Londonderry during the Jacobite war and was reportedly there for the seige.
I am trying to firm up the tree in this area in hopes of identifying the branch which leads to my Great Great Grandfather Robert Workman who came to Canada in the early 1820s.

    Thanks for your help.
