I am looking for Shirleys who were in Garvagh in the 1860/70s.  There was John, Patrick and possibly Mary Jane.  Their parents were Robert Shirley and Eliza Hutchinson.

  • I found 4 children from the start of stat registration in 1864:

John 8.10.1865 (mother’s maiden name Hutchin)

    Patrick 15.6.1868

    Thomas 3.6.1871

    Mary 21.4.1874.

The first 3 births are on the irishgenealogy site and were in Caheny. Couldn’t find Mary’s birth on that site but she is on the GRONI site. However you would have to pay £2.50 to see it.

The revaluation records for Caheny list an Andrew Hutchin in a cottage plot 4Ac, and next door Robert Shirlow on lot 4Ad. I suspect that is Robert Shirley with his wife’s relative next door. The records are hard to follow but both families appear to have vacated around 1884, or earlier.

I looked for Robert and Eliza’s marriage but did not see it.

  • Thanks for that information.  Inspired by the new details I went down off and found a site that came up with two more children, Robert, 1st April 1858 and James 13th January 1860.  The real find was Robert as he is the link to the two Robert Shirleys who are recorded in Scotland.  Robert (1858) was married in Glasgow in 1884 and had a son Robert born in 1900.  This line eventually brings me up to the present day Shirleys all still in the central belt of Scotland.

Robert and Eliza's wedding would be a good one to find.  I notice that her name changes from Hutchinson to Hutchin depending on the source.  I will try and follow that one.  All good stuff, thanks again for you help.

  • Caheny is a rural townland near Garvagh but actually in the parish of Aghadowey where the Shirley family have been since before 1663. Posting in that parish may attract the attention of other descendants.

  • It is nearly two years since my last communications about the Shirleys, but I am still on the case so this information is very useful.  I am hoping I will get a bit further with my search, thank you.
