I am trying to determine if the Lane family of Toem is connected to the James Lane family who lived in Ballinagrana, Emly, Tipperary in the 1830s per the tithe applotment record. They were Protestant.
My RootsIreland and Family Search records show a James Lane married to an Eleanor? who had two daughters Mary Lane (1814- ) and Elizabeth Lane (1816- ) christened in Toem. There was also a Samuel Lane who married to Susanna White in Toem in 1818. They had at least four children- William James Lane (1819- ), Honora Lane (1821- ), Thomas Lane (1823- ), and Samuel Lane (1826- ). My DNA suggests that I am connected to Samuel Lane's descendents. There was also an Ann Lane from Toem who married a John Givens of McKenna, Bansha in 1812.
I think Samuel Lane and James Lane were brothers.
My Great Great Grandmother was Elizabeth Lane Purcell. Based on her death record (RootsIreland), she died in 1900 at age 84. She was living in Gurteen and registered in Emly Parish. Elizabeth Lane from Toem was also born in 1816. Per RootsIreland, my Elizabeth Lane married William Purcell of Monemore, Emly in Knocklong & Glenbrohane Catholic Parish on Dec 9, 1847. Their witnesses were John Lane and Thomas Purcell. Their Civil Marriage was registered in Galbally and identified Church of Ireland as their denomination. Elizabeth's address was identified as Knocklandry? but could have been Knocklara, Glenbrohane, Limerick where William and her raised their family before moving back to Emly. James Lane was identified as her father and William and James Lane were her witnesses. I understand since she was Protestant there were two marriage ceremonies.
James Lane of Ballinagrana, Emly had a son Samuel Lane. He was born in 1815 based on a RootsIreland record showing he died at age 88 in1903 living with his son James in Lisheen, Limerick. Per Family Search, he married Eliza Givens of Clonberg in 1846. He is identified as leasing the land in Ballinagrana on the Griffith Valuation. I am trying to find a birth record for this Samuel to see if he was born in Toem.
This would connect my Elizabeth Lane to Ballinagrana, Emly. If there is no connection, are there any records supporting Elizabeth Lane Purcell was from Toem? What was Eleanor's last name? Were the Lanes merchants since they do not show up in the tithe applotment records in Toem?
Any help in sorting this out would be appreciated.
Thank you- Mary

Dear Mary
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out
Firstly, there will be no birth record for Samuel as he was born prior to 1864 when civil registration began in Ireland for all births of all denominations. As this is the case you will be dependent on parish records. I haven't been able to locate baptism record for him on either rootsireland or ancestry.com in Co. Tipperary.
If I were you I would contact the Representative Church Body and ask if they could give you a copy of Elizabeth's 1816 baptism record as available on Ancestry.com - father James and mother Eleanor. The RCB retain the original records themselves according to the info I have, but it seems only baptisms from the year 1804 alone. In any case, they will be able to advise what is available in original form for Elizabeth. The Ancestry.com record, via Familysearch is from a 'Select Births and Baptisms' category but does list the address as Toem, Tipperary 17th April 1816 so you could contact Utah with the film number 924692.
In order to find out Eleanor's surname you will need to locate a marriage record for her and James. I haven't located anything to date. In relation to the Tithes, this link will give a good overview of some of the issues in relation to placenmaes and this a broader overview.
Best wishes and sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Clare,
Thank you for responding to my posting. The articles you sent on Tithes were informative. You mentioned I should contact the Representative Church Body, who is that? A couple of years ago I did order the the record from Family Search. Unfortunately, the parish record only has the name, Eleanor, and does not include a son Samuel Lane born to James Lane and Eleanor.I appreciate your assistance and hope that at some point DNA might help me make a connection.

Sorry Mary
I should have included a link to the RCB Library. The RCB Library are the body who hold the archives for the Church of Ireland. You can contact them here. They might not be able to shed any further light given what you say above but if possible, if there is any doubt about a record it is always best to try to see the original
Best wishes
