Trying to figure out who William Fitzgerald ( Poyntstown) was married to along with determining how he was related to his neighbors in Poyntstown. (Neighbors, John Fitzgerald and Edward Fitzgerald)

From what I can see in the Tithe, the Griff, and a death cert, William from Poyntstown had a son named John. On my 3GGF death cert it has his dad listed but not his mother, that seems strange.  John came to the US in approx 1852, but before that had 3 possibly 4 children Baptized in Gortnahoe. John's wife was Margaret Benn, daughter of John Benn.

  • Thomas bapt Dec 9th 1844
  • John   bapt  1846
  • William  bapt 1848  ( Can't  find  much on this child but do see record in parish)
  • Margaret bapt Feb 1  1851

I see from maps and parish records, that John married his neighbor Margaret Ben and that her father was a sponsor to my 3GGF John. I see a there were still fitzgeralds in the 1901/1911 census in Poyntstown and can't help but think they are related.  The other things I notice is that William was a Freeholder, and from my understanding is that the land they are on is leased for 3 generations, is this the only way it is listed as a freeholder?

I'm planing my trip now to make it to Poyntstown and would also love any information on best places to stay in that area. Can be great bed and breakfast, or hotel if there are none in the area. Also if anyone is interested the Fitzgeralds I talk about settled in Howard County Iowa after living in Ridgefield CT for a few years when they arrived in the US.  From this area in Ireland I also have Brophy and Fogarty.

I'm very happy I found your site, thanks for any help you can give me, even if it is just pointing me in the right direction.

Regards,

David Fitzgeralld

  • Dear David:

Thanks for your query to Ireland Reaching Out.

You can check out the parish page (if you have not already done so) at:

http://www.glengoole.net/index.html.  There is not any accommodation information there, but some of the links may be useful.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

    Kind regards,

    Jane.
