I am seekin descendants of James Culbert/son and Margaret Alcorn from Glinsk townland. The info. I have on them so far is as follows:
http://culbert.one-name.net/getperson.php?personID=I10141&tree=Culbert
It may be that I am related to these people, but need info. on James' ancestors.
My Culbert ancestor can be found here:
http://culbert.one-name.net/getperson.php?personID=I00162&tree=Culbert
Although my Moses reported he was born in Letterkenny in 1804, I have not been able to find ANY Culberts in Letterkenny in the 18th or 19th Centuries, so am now expanding my search to the rest of County Donegal, focusing particularly on other known Culbert family groups.

Hi Jim,
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
It would be hard not to like the Culbert Family Genealogy Project, it is impressive, well researched, and a well-presented family history project, one of the best I have come across in a long time.
The research you have done into the Culbert/Culbertson family is already so extensive and detailed, I am worried it may be hard to progress it much further with any “big” results found in return, but saying that hopefully with a bit of luck I might be able to give a bit of feedback regarding James Culbert and Magaret Alcorn branch of the family from Glinsk from the mid 1800's up to mid 1900s, and Who knows maybe connect to present day descendants from Fanad or neighboring Parishes that I am sure would be happy to see this.
It will take me a few days to put together records for the family but I will be back to you as soon as I can.

Roger and Seamus,
Thanks so much for your replies and offers of assistance!
As I'm sure you realize, it is the dearth of Ireland records before the mid-1800s that challenges my research inquiries and Culbert Family Genealogy Project goal of connecting the disparate Irish Culberts in this database. Thus, finding living descendants who have personal knowledge of their family history appears to be my best hope for finding the information I seek.
The Culbert Famiy Genealogy Project is my lifelong hobby, which is being maintained through the generous support of the Guild of One Name Studies. As such, there is no rush in formulating a further reply, and "big results" are certainly NOT a requirement when doing so as any and all contributions would be most welcome at any time!
The <culbert.one-name.net> website has links for providing comments and suggestions on each page of data.

Hi Jim,
While researching the Culbert’s of Glinsk, I have prepared a list of all Culbert / Culberson Families recorded back in the 1830’s Tithe Applotment Books and the 1850’s Griffith Valuations for Parishes in Co. Donegal.
There was FOUR references for Culbertsons/Culbert family living in Fanad/Clondavaddog
(1) Francis Culbertson - Townland of Glinsk
(2) James Culbertson – Townland of Glinsk
(3) George Culbert – Townland of Carran Upper & Lower
(4) John Culbert – Townland of Carran Upper & Lower.

(1) Francis Culbertson - Townland of Glinsk
(2) James Culbertson – Townland of Glinsk
I will come back to George and John Culbert from Carran Upper & Lower - Tithe Applotment & Griffith Valuation later on but for now I attached Culbertsons of Glinsk.

1857 - GRIFFITH VALUATION:
The Griffith Valuation Records and Maps which were documented in 1857 for the Parish Clondavaddog has turned out to be a handy document for a lot of families, although it is not a Census Record for the 1850’s naming the individuals within the home, it does name the head of the household and the exact location of that person's house where the family would had their land and their home.
There is one small flaw with these maps and that is that you have the pretty cream and red ones which were generally produced 20 years after the Griffith Survey itself was published. Most often, this does not matter as there has been no change in land ownership but occasionally the map simply does not match the 1857 Griffiths Record (attached).
Note: On the original maps the scored out plot numbers are same as from the 1857 Griffith Record attached. The replacement numbers are the updated Plot numbers shown in the revised Maps of 1870’s. I have a few slides put together reflecting both types of maps versus present day Google Map locations, so as to be able to "walk the land".
There are TWO references for Culbertson/Culbert family living in Glinsk, Fanad
1857 (Black and White Map)
PLOT.9 James Culbert – Medium sized House and 5 Acres of land
PLOT.7 Shared Mountain land James Culbertson with Samuel, McCoach, Robert Alcorn, Anne Alcorn and Joseph Poer.
1870’s (Cream and Red Map)
PLOT.9 James Culbert – Medium sized House and 5 Acres of land and Plot 12 which was Joseph Poers
PLOT.7 This later changed ownership to 1c (owner unknown). Plots 7a & 7b (next to Plot 9) still showing as shared land.
What it does tell us, when looking at the revised map in the case of Joseph Poer who has Plot 12 in the original Griffith Map (Black and White) of 1857, Joseph Poer has sold Plot 12 he had in 1857 to James Culbert sometime about the 1870’s (Cream and Red map).

I am hoping this may be of help to any Culbert Family visiting the townland Glinsk in search of the exact location of the Culbertson Home (Plot 9) from the mid 1800’s, Just reference the location on the maps shown and compare it to present day Google Maps to walk the land.

Seamus,
Many thanks you for this information. Although this will be VERY helpful for those interested in these particular Culbert/sons of Clondavaddog, I am not at that point. Instead, I seek living descendants of them in the hopes thay have info. on prior generations (late 1700s to early 1800s) so as to ascertain if there are connections to my Culbert branch.

Seamus,
Followup questions:
Where did you find the Tithe Applotment images?
Where did you find the Griffith's Valuation pages?
Where did you find the Griffith's Valuation maps?
Where did you find the detailed goring images, as Google Mpas does not provide clear images at that level of detail?
How did you superimpose a transparent ground image over a map?
Thanks!

Hi Jim
All the information I have added or may add such as the 1834 Tithes Applotments and 1857 Griffith Valuation Maps for Culberts of Glisk or Carren Upper in Fanad has been put together for any local Culbert families to reference as I am aware that you are not at that point in your research. I have come across Culberts and Culbertson families on Facebook (friends of my friends only) and at least one ancestry family in particular that would have originated in the Townland of Glinsk, in the Parish of Fanad.
You happened to mention finding living descendants who have personal knowledge of their family history appears to be your best hope for you finding the information you seek. From personal experience this can tend to be quite difficult to find because information going back to late 1700’s is very hard come by, possibly a DNA Connection between yourself and these family would be deemed as good a result as you could wish for., but that is only my opinion, nothing more.
As regards follow up questions these are the sites available to search for families in Clondavaddog back in the 1800’s
Tithe Applotment images?

Where did you find the Griffith's Valuation pages?
Where did you find the Griffith's Valuation maps?
Where did you find the detailed goring images
How did you superimpose a transparent ground image over a map?

Jim Culbert,
I am Al Gross, a decendent of William Culbert born in Glinsk, County Donegal, Ireland in 1829. I was contacted by Seamus Callaghan concerning the information provided on this site. I am a member of Ancestry.com and have a tree there for my father which I manage (WCGross Tree). William Culbert is my maternal great great grandfather. There is a pdf file ("William & Jane Culbert0001") in William Culbert's Gallery that has to be downloaded and opened with a pdf viewer. That file contains along with their story a report and pictures of two separate visits of two of my cousins to Glinsk back in the 1950s.
I have done DNA testing through Ancestry.com and I think that we are probably related and hope that would be proved through our DNA. Have you done a DNA test through Ancestry.com? Do you have a Tree on Ancestry.com? If you cannot access this information through Ancestry.com let me know and I will get it to you another way.
Regards,
Al Gross

Seamus, thanks again for the references. I hope someone will see this message string some day who can help.

Al,
Thanks for your message!
I manage the Culbert Family Genealogy Project at: culbert.one-name.net This is a public database, except for living individuals.
I have info. on your William Culbert here: http://culbert.one-name.net/getperson.php?personID=I14855&tree=Culbert
I have info. on William's parents here: http://culbert.one-name.net/getperson.php?personID=I6270&tree=Culbert
The parents would be approximately the age of my immigrant ancestor, Moses Culbert, b. Letterkenny, 1804. Since I know nothing about Moses' family in Ireland, and have found NO records for any Culberts there at that time, I have to assume that his ancestral family was elsewhere, most likely in one of the nearby parishes of Co. Donegal. Thus, I am particularly interested in info. on other Culbert/son family groups in Co. Donegal, and particularly would like to find your William Culbertson's ancestors and their locations. Without records, it will take contact with living descendants such as yourself in the hopes that family history back to that point is still known. Alas, this was not the case with my family, as perhaps the break caused by migration was too complete.
I do not know how to access your Ancestry Tree, nor do I have an Ancestry membership, so I doubt if I could access it in any case. It is disappointing that Ancestry Trees are generally not public information.
Nevertheless, I would welcome any additional information you could provide me.
In addition, I am the administrator of the Culbert DNA project at FamilyTree DNA, which can be found here: https://www.familytreedna.com/groups/culbert/about
Our focus is on Y-DNA testing, which shows linkages in the Culbert family. Six male Culberts have been tested to date.
I have no access to Ancestry.com DNA testing, and do not know how their testing would be helpful in this regards.
I look forward to further communications with you.

Hi Jim and Al,
This is a fairly good result and I am glad you are getting the chance to meet and share you're family history. Al would you mind if I was to upload the book "The story of Jane and William Culbert" directly here in this post in irelandxo. It is a great read and I know local families from Fanad that are mensioned in it along with folks seeing the few the photos from 1950's Glinsk it would be well received. This way Jim Culbert could see it without ancestry access and able to share it with other Culbert family too.
I see that the pdf file is too big to post here at present but I wiil look into somehow reducing it in the next few days and adding it the weekend if that would be ok with you.

Seamus and Jim,
Seamus, I would be happy for you to post the file on this site. I was going to ask for Jim's email address and send him a copy. Still happy to do that if necessary. Sorry that I have no information beyond my 1829 William Culbert's mother and father

Seamus and Al,
Thanks again. I'd like to see that story. I have the idea of possibly visiting Ireland for the first time in Oct 2018, and may be able to take a crack at uncovering new info. on these Donegal Culbert/son families.
If you find you wish to contact me outside of Ireland XO, I can be reached via my website's "contact me" process at: culbert.one-name.net
and also at jhculbert at gmail.com

Hi Jim. Just stumbled on your post by chance. James and Margaret were my maternal great, great, great, great grandparents.
Their daughter Elizabeth married Robert Peoples.
Elizabeth and Robert's son Matthew married Anna Carr. Matthew was Church of Ireland but converted to Catholicism.
Matthew and Anna's daughter Rose married Neil Carr Doaghmore.
Neil and Rose had two daughters - Anna (my grandmother who died in 2016) and Bridget who is still alive and well in Glinsk.
Anna married Michael Begley and had 5 children including my mother Rose.
Rose married Edward Sweeney and they have 3 children, I am one of them.
I based any Culbert/son info from the same Culbert site as you did. I have my family tree on Myheritage.com. Are you related to James and Margaret?

Hello Michael!
Thanks for your message.
I don't know if I'm related, because my info. does not go back far enough - earlier than James Culbert/son and Margaret Alcorn.
That Culbert website is mine.
If you'd like to continue the conversation directly, please contact me via that website, or at jhculbert at gmail.com
Thanks!

Hi Michael Sweeney
I have just come across this site by chance tonight whilst browsing other travel sites to visit.
If I am correct I last met Bridget Mary and all the family when I was about 8 years old which would be in the sixties.. And if I am also right did Anna run a post office or shop? I remember staying with the familly. Going out doing the harvest and also coming out the front door into the yard and down a few steps where we collected water.
My grandmother was Mary Ellen (Helen) Reid Powers (married name Walker) born 16 May 1896 died 4 Nov 1965. My mother was Janet Marjorie Walker born 1928 died 2007. Her sister was Mary Ellen Walker (married George McPhee).
McNutt's from Leatbeg were my grandmother's cousins. I will get my daughter to scan a few pictures in. I have a picture of Joe McNutt
As far as I know Dill Power(stayed at 5 Glinsk), Sam Power stayed at 17 Leatbeg and Margaret Power stayed with her brother Joseph at 7 Glinsk. Looking at the 1901 census there wasnt any mention of Ellen Reid. Now the question is - did she die or did she leave.
Margaret Power (dob 1847) and Joseph Power (dob 1850) were brother and sister. Now if I am right I think James Reid and George Reid of Leatbeg are brothers of Ellen Reid.
Joseph Power dob 1850 married Ellen Reid (My great grandparents). They stayed at No 7 Glinsk.
The children of the above were : Marjorie dob 1886, Joseph dob 1893, James dob 1890
and margaret power dob 1847 (brother and sister).
Regards for now.

Hi , I have just came across this website when I was searching for ‘ Culberts / Culbertsons’ in the Donegal area . I have discovered my great-great grandfather (Mathew Peoples of Glinsk ) mother is a Culbert ( Elizabeth Culbert ) and was wondering if there is any information available and if there is any connection to members on here .
Thanks .

Hi.
I have some information on the Peoples/Culbert connection on my family tree. Can you send me your ancestry line (that links you to Matthew) and I can invite you to the site. I also have a photo of Matthew and his wife Anna.
Thanks.
